Cologne, Germany (Sports Network) - Sweden and the Czech Republic advanced to the semifinals of the 2010 world championship with quarterfinal victories on Thursday.

Sweden posted a 4-2 win over Denmark and the Czech Republic earned a 2-1 shootout triumph over Finland. The Swedes and Czechs will meet in one semifinal on Saturday.

Marcus Nilson scored a first-period goal for the Swedes, who then opened a 3-0 cushion in the second behind scores from Jonas Andersson and Rickard Wallin. Jonas Gustavsson made 27 saves in the victory.

Sweden will play in the semifinals for the 10th straight year. Jesper Damgaard and Morten Madsen had the goals for Denmark, which was making its first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals. The best previous finish for the Danes was 10th in 2007.

Finland carried a 1-0 lead into the third period of its quarterfinal, as a goal just 55 seconds into the contest from Petri Kontiola stood up through 40 minutes. Jakub Klepis tied it on a power play for the Czechs just 1:12 into the third.

The game went to a shootout after the 10-minute overtime period. Lukas Kaspar and Jan Marek sandwiched goals for the Czechs around one for Jarkko Immonen, as the first three shooters all found the net. Jussi Jokinen then missed the net for Finland and Klepis missed with a chance to seal it. However, Kontiola also failed to hit the net on Finland's third chance, sending the Czechs to the semifinals.

Thursday's second wave of quarterfinal games features Russia against Canada and Switzerland versus Germany.
