The paper also reports that the Lightning can't afford to make the payment to the star centreman.

Rumours have been circulating for several days that the Lightning and Montreal Canadiens have been talking about a potential trade. Lecavalier, whose Lightning are on a California road trip, is well aware of the rumours.

"I'm just glad we're in California and not Canada," Lecavalier, 28, said jokingly to the St. Petersburg Times. "I haven't even looked at the Internet.

"I understand there are a lot of rumours. But they are rumours. I have heard them throughout my career. I like playing in Tampa. I am a loyal person."

Lightning general manager Brian Lawton changed his statement Tuesday, telling the Times that no player is off-limits heading into this year's NHL trade deadline on March 4.

"There are no players who are untouchable," Lawton said from Los Angeles.

"And that has nothing to do with Vinny Lecavalier.

"That has to do with the status of any team I'm managing. It has to do with our macro goal of being committed to winning, being committed to giving our fans a winner. No player supersedes the goals of any team I'm working on."

If you can trade Gretzky Thorton etc you can trade Vinny.I think for this deal to close there must be cash involved and thank god the Habs dont have it.This trade is only a short term fix for the habs to get #25 then with the rape of talent we get to sit back brag about cup #25 and watch Leaf type hockey.Be 2yrs more patient and enjoy this team for who knows howlong.WE are not Leaf fans who are comfotable losing and have accepted that now for 41yrs

Paging Mr. Burke......paging Mr. Brian Burke..... Who could possibly be a better individual to build the new Leafs around??? I sure hope Brian is about to start earning his serious salary and take advantage of the unholy financial mess that is present day Tampa. Leaf fans are watching and waiting.....

The leafs don't have the prospects or the players needed to trade for Vinny. Also is this not the main type of thing that brought about 40+ years of failure? Trading players and prospects and draft picks to pick up one player? I mean is one quality player going to win it for you? I mean you had Sundin...that is assuming that Sundin was a quality player..

It's one thing to trade for an aging Brian Leetch, but it's another to trade for a player near or at the top of his career. Tampa is a running joke now.......sorta kinda reminds me of our Pal Hal back in the early 80's until his death.......

Oh I understand that but how do you rebuild when you have no draft picks because you have traded them all away? And I don't think that Vinny is a good idea for Montreal even though I would love them to win. Giving too much up and then we are stuck with nothing.

He should go to Toronto, they have a Superstar young gun named Michael Saban..maybe Tampa would take him and Kaberle in a trade for Vinny?

Give the Habs Vinny. They give the fans the Cup.

The Leaf fans fawn over potential trades like an ugly girl at a dance. Forget it, guys. You're ugly and won't get any prettier anytime soon. As for the trade, I think trading 4+ good players for one great player isn't a good move, not in the short-term nor the long-term. Leave it all as is.
