Heatley stubborn, Sens miffed, Oil silent

Murray: 'I don't know if we will continue'

Joanne Ireland, Edmonton Journal

Published: Friday, July 03, 2009

The Dany Heatley camp still wants a trade, the Ottawa Senators now want a more substantive reimbursement, and the Edmonton Oilers are not yet saying where they stand in the maelstrom that began brewing earlier this week.

Having had to fork over $4 million --a bonus that was due at midnight on Wednesday--Senators general manageer Bryan Murray does want more than Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid. The three Oilers were being offered up by Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini in exchange for the sullen sniper.

The deal was essentially scuttled by Heatley, who would not waive his no-trade clause--in spite of a face-to-face meeting with Tambellini and president Kevin Lowe on Wednesday evening.

"(The deal) is different now," Murray said Thursday at a news conference in Ottawa. "And I don't know if we will continue (with Edmonton) or not. ... Very definitely, it's not the same deal as it was (Wednesday)."

Heatley's agent, J. P. Barry, claimed that Murray must have had other trading partners, and that it would have been impossible for his client to make a decision if he only had one team to consider.

"I specifically told him two days ago, long before the trade happened, 'Do not trade him to Edmonton until you have other options.'And he turned around and consummated the trade despite my request," Barry told ESPN.com."I think it was completely mishandled by (Murray). It was a pressure tactic.

"He loaded up the gun and put the gun against our heads."

Tambellini still wasn't available for comment on Thursday, but suffice it to say the Oilers would have unloaded Penner and his $4.25-million salary and would have picked up the one-shot scorer they have needed for a long time.

Securing help in the free-agent market may not be an option, something Murray discerned after seeing the moves of the past two days while he awaited Heatley's decision.

"Edmonton was the one offer that was somewhat legitimate," Murray said.

Rangers general manager Glen Sather chose instead to invest $37.5 million on unrestricted free agent Marian Gaborik, and didn't give up any assets in the process.

Los Angeles Kings assistant general manager Ron Hextall said before the draft that, while a high-scoring left-winger was what his club needed, he wasn't sure Heatley was the right fit --not after he signed a big contract, then said he couldn't play for rookie head coach Cory Clouston.

"That's three coaches he's had trouble with. That raises a red flag for us," Hextall said at the time.

This has also left Smid, Cogliano and Penner wondering what's next. The three know that they were deemed expendable by the club --assuming that the Oilers don't yet reach another agreement that suits Heatley.

Others like goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, who just signed on with Edmonton, will watch and see what unfolds.

"It's a pretty good story around the NHL. Any team would love to have a 50-goal scorer, but I don't know what's going to happen," he said.

Tambellini, meanwhile, is expected to speak today.

A trade partner cannot offer cash under the NHL's collective bargaining agreement, but deputy commissioner Bill Daly has suggested that the Senators could file a grievance.

Heater wants a captaincy
Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 12:42 PM
Heater playey extremely well recently in the "Worlds" and showed that he is a premiere player. The "Worlds" separates the "Big Blows" from the "Big Gunners". Heately is one of the most gifted goalscoers in hockey. Burke, in Toronto should move to acquire Heater and make him the captain. That would give Heater the incentive to syep up his overall play in other areas besides goalscoring. This guy can play compete with anyone, if he is given the incentive. The leafs only want "bargain Basement" players and that has been their history for 32 years.

Though I got my own problems with my own team..Teach Heatley a lesson, sit him the year, finish low and draft Taylor Hall, then trade Heatley and Speeza in separate deals, Voila, a rebuilt team.
Heately to Detroit?
Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 12:46 PM
Watch and see! Next year the Wings would be the favourites to win the cup.He is the type of player suited to their offensive style.

I can't stand the Ottawa Senators or their fans but Heatley has managed to make even me feel sorry for them. This man is a disgrace. I doubt Dan Snyder would have had a problem playing in Ottawa or Edmonton for that much money. One can only hope that Murray and Melnyk make him ride the buses in the minors until he agrees to kiss every backside in the city. Yzerman should rethink his inclusion on Team Canada too. Heatley is niether a team player nor a decent Candaian. Surely there are better people to represent us in Vancouver. And no, I do not mean Spezza. Go Leafs Go!

FYI The Leafs had one of the League's highest payrolls in the years leading up to the lockout. Where have you been???

Whether he had been drinking or not, it was ruled an accident. Get over it!! Don't like this mess also - but as the Sens suck...good on them. Ha!

Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 01:40 PM
According to the Georgia Court County Register, Dany Heatley did in fact have alcohol in his system the night of his accident that caused the death of Dan Snyder. However, the amount did not exceed the legal limit as proscribed by the state. These are facts.

Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 01:42 PM
The incident was not ruled an accident. It was gross negligence resulting in vehicular homicide due to excessive speed.
CHANTRY MAN!
Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 02:25 PM
thank you for the facts FYI. It's official! Heatley has much to be thankful for and yet she continues to behave like a spoiled arrogant athlete worthy of playing in the NBA or NFL. He should go play in Russia where drinking and driving and wiping one's behind with signed contracts are common.

Heatley is a selfish, immature whiner getting what he deserves. However, the idiot agents and Murray are also responsible for this spiralling out of control. No wonder the Sens are going nowhere fast.

Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 03:03 PM
Good point Tie! Really thought the blockbuster signing of Chris Neil was a step in the same direction. Guess Murray was too wrapped up in his own soap opera to help his team.

Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 03:07 PM
Well put Tiger. Wonder who Jason "occasional effort" Spezza is going to feed with those passes now? Funny, Jason was flushed out by the Canadian Olympic program for being what he is... a one-dimensional, soft prima-donna.
Wade Belak
Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 03:10 PM
Man, the Leaf goons got it exactly right! Tie, Tiger, Brian, you guys are bang on. Once Murray gets this thing sorted out in November, maybe he can focus on getting himself some secondary scoring, some puck moving defencemen and oh yea, maybe a goaltender too! Ha ha ha ha.
Sens Fan
Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 03:13 PM
So true... the point is, by November all the free agents will be gone and the only way to aquire any of those things will be by way of a trade and you never get something for nothing. Got a funny feeling we are going in the wrong direction with no hope of righting this ship.
Derek Boogard
Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 03:17 PM
Yea, Dustin Penner was going to address all of the Sens needs too. Too bad Dany buggered it all up. It would have been great to have a 4M/year 30 point player, along with two average prospects. Sad think is that the Oilers offer is as good as it gets for a 50 goal scorer who hates every coach that doesn't put him on a pedestal and tell him how good he is.

The Sens should trade him to Montreal so that he can join the other vastly overpaid soft 60 point players they seem to covet. At 5'11" he may be four inches too tall for that Habs jersey though. Hey do those Canadiens jerseys come in any other sizes other than XS??? LOL!

A year as a healthy scratch in the press box might change Heatley's mind. I thought I'd seen it all for hold outs and trade me demands in the NHL but this is the absolute most spoiled I've ever seen any player behave, ever.

Why don't the oilers say they want more for Penner? He's been paid a fortune by them and is still owed a fortune more; so by the logic of Murray (the monkey brain) the oilers should be asking for more back?!? Murray your logic is absolutely retarded.

Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 06:54 PM
"I don't know if we'll continue", what he means is he's pondering suicide. He's not sure if he should bother coming back to work, or just hang himself in the garage all because his best player wants a divorce? Sheesh, grow up Murray!
hey penner is owed alot
Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 06:55 PM
Actually you're the one that's not that bright if you don't understand this simple equation. Here, let me spell it out for you: Heatley is owed $8 million to play hockey this year. $4 million of that was paid by Ottawa on July 1st. So his new team is only responsible for the remaining $4 million for the rest of the season. If the Sens are essentially paying half his salary this year to play for another team, then obviously they would want more in return, or failing that more in salary($4 million's worth) also going to the new team as well. Get it?
Why Blame Heatley?
Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 07:11 PM
The big news here is that the Sen's organization made this contract up and the PLAYER not the TEAM has all the pull. Maybe next time the Sen's will hire a better lawyer and get a better contract done. Good for Heatley for understanding his rights in this situation. Heatley just got 4 mil from a team who hates him now..... awesome!
Hey good for heatley
Fri, Jul 3, 09 at 07:20 PM
Yes Heatley is getting away with it this time but what do you think his next contacts will look like? All 1 year deals with no 'no trade' clauses. Despite his talent there aren't many GM's out there who want to deal with a player who's word means nothing.

Count me as another Leafs fan who actually feels bad for the Sens. I'm hoping they stick to their guns like they did when they stuck it to Yashin when he refused to play and declared himself a free agent. What kind of an assholes (I'm including his agent here) sign a huge long-term deal in this salary cap era, put a trade demand out in the public to diminish the trade value, then refuse a trade? Let him sit out. He's a team-killer.

The guy got a huge contract meant to keep him in Ottawa and happy for a long time. A bonus, more than most players make in a year and he ain't happy. Send him down to the AHL and let him rot. Since he came into the NHL he has made a number of poor choices, everyone has forgiven and bent over backwards to help this slob. He is all the things that money does to destroy professional athletes. Too good for his team. AHL
