Burke flexes muscles

'They'll be with this team for the long haul,' says Nonis of Exelby, Komisarek and Orr

The Maple Leafs had better have a pretty good penalty killing unit next season.

Garnet Exelby #2 of the Atlanta Thrashers fights against Mike Richards #18 of the Philadelphia Flyers on December 28, 2005 at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The Flyers won the game 5-4.

They're going to need one with the tough, take-no-prisoners kind of players GM Brian Burke picked up yesterday in defencemen Mike Komisarek and Garnet Exelby and enforcer-winger Colton Orr.

Combined, they've played 963 games, accumulated only 22 goals but have 1,556 penalty minutes.

Indeed, on a day when offensive stars like twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Marian Hossa and Mike Cammalleri were making big-money deals, the Leafs opted to go after players who exude pugnacity - exactly the type Burke talked about when he started his reign with the club.

"It was apparent from the time Brian Burke took the job, he wanted the Leafs to be tougher," said assistant GM Dave Nonis. "We wanted players who would not just fight, but play hard. We think we accomplished that."

The Leafs also got younger, with the players acquired yesterday in their mid-20s, while they parted ways with 32-year-old defenceman Pavel Kubina.

"They'll be with this team for the long haul," said Nonis of the newcomers. "We know we need time to make our team into a contender. We wanted guys who could be here when we become contenders."

There is more to come. The Leafs are listening to proposals for defenceman Tomas Kaberle, hoping to flip him for a scoring forward they failed to land yesterday.

Burke was in Sweden, foiled in his attempts to talk to the Sedins, who re-signed with Vancouver moments before they could have opted for unrestricted free agency. It won't be a wasted trip, since he'll get to make another pitch to free agent goalie Jonas Gustavsson.

Komisarek, 27, is the prize blue line acquisition.

An alternate captain with the Habs, Komisarek signed a five-year deal at $4.5 million (all figures U.S.) a season, adding size and toughness to complement Luke Schenn.

Komisarek was 25th in the league in hits, with 191 in just 66 games.

"He's a guy that's just coming into the prime of his career," said Nonis.

"He's a high-end player and plays a hard-nosed style of game, he brings leadership qualities to this team."

The Leafs came close to trading for Exelby - another player who can deliver big hits - during the season and finally landed him yesterday, along with prospect centre Colin Stuart from the Atlanta Thrashers, in exchange for Kubina and minor league forward Tim Stapleton.

"People are going to enjoy how (Exelby) plays," said Nonis. "He's a terrific shot blocker, one of the leaders on hits on his team and his hits are quite violent.

"He's a guy who can put up a hit, which can be a major momentum-changer for his team."

Exelby, 27, earns $1.725 million, much less than Kubina's $5 million annual stipend. Stuart earns $500,000. Both will be unrestricted free agents next summer and give the Leafs a little extra cap room.

"It made it easier to sign Komisarek to a long-term deal," said Nonis. "Kubina played well here, he put a lot of pucks in the net. But we thought bringing a younger defenceman back in that deal, who plays the style we want to play, was important, and we have a lot cap space left to improve our team."

Stuart, 26, scored three short-handed goals as a bit-performer for the Thrashers last season. His brother plays for the Bruins, and his father is a doctor for Burke's Team USA entry into the 2010 Olympics.

Orr, 27, signed a four-year deal worth $4 million and gives the Leafs the kind of drop-your-gloves enforcer the team has lacked.

Offensively, the best you can say is Orr is on a three-year scoring streak. He scored twice in the 2006-07 season, once in the 2007-08 season and once last season. He averaged a little more than six minutes a game last season.

The Leafs continue to lack scoring. They had hoped to go after the Sedins and were frustrated when Montreal scooped up Cammalleri. But Nonis said he's not worried.

"You find out if certain players who haven't been given an opportunity can score," said Nonis. "You would have said last year's team would have had a difficult time scoring as well, but when certain players got the opportunity, they were able to put the puck in the net.

"If we have to start the season with the players we have right now, I'm sure we'll be competitive enough and some of these guys will surprise all of us."

This is the key thing to absorb here: The Leafs will have tons of cap space over the next 2 seasons to fill the holes. Right now, it is building the foundation. Komisarek at age 27 is a guy that Toronto should have drafted 7 years ago. Instead, pick him up now, sign him long term, and you've just fixed that problem. It is like it never happened. By trading Kubina we essentially replaced him with a 5 year younger defenceman with way more leadership potential. Komisarek, Schenn and (somebody) will become the Toronto version of Phaneuf, Regehr, and Bouwmeester. And now, I'd say Toronto's best bet is to keep Kaberle around till the end of his contract. This team is taking leaps beyond strides.

Pugnacity, Truculence & Testosterone? Lets not get too hung up on those words. Great additions to our D in Komisarek & Exelby. But indeed, who is going to score the goals? We are going to HAVE to trade for some 1st forward line help now that the free agent market for scorers is pretty much been cleared.

I have been advising Brian throughout this process & since he came to Toronto on movements. Scoring as the Real Smeg has pointed out is going to be an issue but not something that cant be resolved. Look for a package of players to pry some scoring away from an offense rich team w/cap probems to pry away some scoring talent rather than us unloading Kaberle. At least that will be my advice to BB. Our defence is looking good though, if we lose Kaberle though we lose a heck of a lot of mobility. This mole has spoken.

Why would trade away Kubina when he put in alot pucks in the net a hard slapshot and was defensive and he bring in a horrible defender

I find it really funny that people think that because Toronto doesn't have Cammelleri there is nobody on the team to score goals. Well, interestingly enough, there are 28 other NHL teams that did not sign Cammelleri and I'm sure they will not get shutout every game. People said that about New Jersey over the last 10 years...their record speaks for itself. People said that about Dallas over the last 10 years, their record speaks for itself. Who is going to score the goals? Other players. Who have not been signed yet. I love this commentary, it really just makes me laugh, that people really think that now that THIS is the team Toronto is putting in the Stanley Cup Final. Yup, its all done now! Ready to go! As if Brian just declared "We can win the cup with this team"...Unbelievable.

SARUJ: By trading Kubina, we could safely make a strong offer to Komisarek who is 5 years younger and a much more effective leader and defensive d-man. Kubina, at 32, would be outside of his prime years by the time this team is contending for a cup (3-5 years). A player like Kubina is not hard to replace. Pittsburgh and Detroit, neither of them have a player that fits Kubina's profile...yet they were still successful.

Thu, Jul 2, 09 at 10:01 AM
Brian could have signed Komisarek and still kept Kubina. But that would give him 3-5 million dollars less to acquire an offensive forward...In short, Saruj my dear friend, you are the biggest idiot to type a comment on faceoff.com.

Brian went to Sweden with the intention of discussing potential contracts with many players. He agreed to cover the European market while I handled North America. Yes, the Leafs were interested in the Sedin brothers. The terms of the contract were not even discussed as they never reached unrestricted free agency.
leafs got lotsa D
Thu, Jul 2, 09 at 11:26 AM
By my count the leafs have almost too many NHL calibre defencemen. And an "inside source" has revealed that Burke is inclined to hold onto Kaberle unless someone knocks his socks off. Same "source" states the Leafs are after Francois Beauchemin of Anahiem as well. That could lead to potential pairings of Kaberle/Schenn, Komisarek/Beauchemin, Finger/Exelby, Van Ryn/White, Frogren/Oreskovik, and Stralman. Wait, how many defencmen do you dress per game again?
Burke insults leaf fans
Thu, Jul 2, 09 at 11:29 AM
Kadri is 5'8" tall, so what is all this bull about toughness. The goon that burke acquired cannot play the game worth a damn. I do not think enough of the goon to remember what his name was. Look, if you want to win in the new NHl you have to have talent and a little size to go along with it.Komisarek is a cast-off from Montreal and hasn't shown that he can contibute significantly in important games. Montreal went down in 4 against Boston in the recent play-offs. Where was Komisarek? So far I give burke a score of C- on his dealings to improve the Maple leafs. Hossa would have been a good player to pursue. hossa suffered a mild concussion prior to the play-offs and his play was off as a result. During the regular season, he played extremely well for Detroit. The leafs are doing what they have always done in the past and that is to find the cheapest players available. This year the leafs will fail to make the play-offs again unless leafs loosen the purse-strings.
Dave Nonis
Thu, Jul 2, 09 at 11:31 AM
There is no doubt that Tomas Kaberle is a player that is difficult to replace. You are right, with the Komisarek addition we have developed our defence. However, on the front end we know that there is some work to be done. By adding another defenceman, you essentially increase your firepower in being able to acquire offensive talent. The strategy behind loading up at the back end is that we could go to a team that has some great offensive talent, that is thin on defence, and have many options to pick from in order to get the guy we want.
Dave Nonis
Thu, Jul 2, 09 at 11:35 AM
Kadri is 6'0. Colton Orr is a great defensive player who is known to stick up for his teammates. Komisarek is a high-end player and he brings great leadership qualities with him at an age where he is just entering his prime years. Unfortunately, we can't simply sign every top-end player in the free agent market because there is a salary cap in the NHL, and we want to be well-positioned to capitalize on future opportunities. We will not know until April 2010 whether this team will make the playoffs or not, but we think they are closer now than they were two weeks ago.

27 years old, 6'4 245 lbs, former 7th overall pick, 2009 NHL all-star, CCHA best defenseman, was coached by Aleksei Nikiforov, has played on three world junior teams and 2006 IIHF world championships...Quite the resume.

Some information has leaked out through the media, not exactly sure how...I won't discuss specifics of players involved but I can tell you that we are only seriously considering offers that involve a top 6 scoring forward and a second element (draft pick, future consideration, goaltender, etc). Ideally, we don't want to trade Tomas. Ideally, Tomas plays his last NHL game in a Maple Leafs uniform. However, the asset is there, we need help up front to become a contender, so we are listening to the offers.

I really don't know what to say about the Heatley situation. Everything taking place in Ottawa over the last two years is more bizarre than I could have imagined. The way Emery left, the way the team just sputtered, and now this: Heatley's unexpected request to be traded, and then even more unexpected rejection of a trade offer...I couldn't tell you. I think the situation is going to get ugly, and unfortunately I think the Senators' hockey club is going to suffer from it. I can tell you this much, you will never find a player of low character or poor attitude on the Maple Leafs.

What is wrong with you people? Mike Komisarek was a rat when he played in Montreal and is still a rat even if he does play for the Leafs. Personally I am a little embarassed by the fact Burke had to sign a castoff Montreal didn't want back. I have been neutral on Burke since he came here though my friends all hate him and can't understand why we have him. I now join that group, stay in Europe Brian and never come back. I kepp hoping this komisarek thing is a bad dream, the only consolation is that Lucic will absolutely kill him and now I can watch it from the second level live.

Blah blah blah. This is nothing but fan fodder and will not materially improve the team in any way but just get them some media attention (which it is evidently doing). Burke didn't win in Anaheim because the team was tough. The Ducks won because they could ice Pronger and Niedermayer for 30 minutes a game EACH, Giguère played off his head, and the Senators do what a team led by Alfredson, Spezza and Heatley will ALWAYS do, which is fold under pressure and fail to escalate their game. This is step one in a strategy to nowhere.
Re Shank
Thu, Jul 2, 09 at 02:38 PM
I agree Shank, doesn't make one bit of difference having a guy like Colton Orr who may play 2-3 minutes per game. The Red Wings and Penguins don't play that style of game and look at what they have accomplished. Fighting as a tactic has not worked since the 1970's so Burke must change his philosophy or else we will continue to be bottom feeders. The game now is about speed and moving the puck and those needs were not addressed at all. Kubina was not Lidstrom but he had the ability to move the puck and chip in offensively which is how you win in today's NHL. Toronto had some decent teams a few years back and a little success but that was more because of what Sundin did, not what Domi did. Get into this century Brian Burke or get out of town, this is not Anaheim where you need fighting to sell tickets.

Leafs are tougher...Period. If the team can lock up JG as backup...they are pretty solid in goaltending. They are better defensively. Leafs had no problem scoring last few years...their weakness was late game giveaways and keeping the puck out of their own net. Once they have addressed those issues, got tougher, which they have...they will focus on more skilled forwards....Hanson, Bozak, Kadri or Stalberg could crack the rosters..hopefully more than 1...2 or 3 would be nice and could contribure to goal production in the next few years. Watch for it.

Draft Choice
Thu, Jul 2, 09 at 03:04 PM
With all due respect, Mr. Nonis, I understand the commitment to beefing up the Buds, however, speed and skill is a higher commodity in today's NHL. And so far this newer example or the Leafs are more challenged of both. What you and your boss are doing is putting together a slow footed "GOON-SQUAD". Sometimes we are too close and committed to a philosophy that higher reasoning fails to permeate our consciousness. Brian Burke is your Boss, but I wonder if you are truly sold on his philosophy or just hog-tide being is subordinate? The Toronto Maple Leafs is unilaterally designing a squad that greatly differs from most of the elite teams in the NHL. Pittsburgh didn't have an excessive amount of big bodies and they are the proud champions of 2008/2009. The Blackhawks are going come to towns and skate circles around the collection of pylons that Mr. Burke has assembled. And Matt Venca, you come across as Brian Burkes P.R. agent; from your point of view the man is infallible.that I find annoying.
Re: Draft Choice
Thu, Jul 2, 09 at 03:15 PM
I think that you are being a bit harsh. We definitely need some toughness. Fair go, we also need speed and skill but we need the fear factor for that to work well.

And one more thing Mr. Nonis, I recommend your Boss inquires about Juaj Valach that hulking Slovak kid. He's Burke's type at 6'6 and in my opinion was by far the best rear-guard at the world junior's this year.

Thu, Jul 2, 09 at 03:29 PM
I hated watching games last year and seeing that the only Leaf willing to stand up for his teammates and drop the gloves from time to time was 18 year old rookie Luke Schenn. That should never have been his role but I applaud him for never backing down. Enter Colton Orr. Enough said.
pylons?

Finally a voice of reason. Nice to see someone calling Burke on these ridiculous moves. We crapped all over JFJ for some of the things he did but are willing to look the other way at Burke. Why, because he won a cup in Anaheim with a team Brian Murray built. I too am sick of the apologists for Burke, if Brian Burke traded 10 first round picks for Donald Brashear Matt Venca and Hockey Guru would be hailing it a great move.

Yeah toughness matters...but only when you're protecting star players. So what's going to happen now, Orr is going to beat the crap out of someone for taking a run at...wait for it...MIKHAIL GRABOVSKI???? So instead of the Leafs losing 5-2 they'll lose 4-2. Sweet. Good for the Pro Line people I guess. You know, all that's going to really happen here is that this goon squad is going to try and "do something" with their 8 minutes of ice time, and that means they are going to take lots and lots and LOTS of stupid penalties. So what the Leafs *cough* "gain" in toughness they will lose in having to kill of more penalties. Bottom line? This is a smokescreen. The Leafs have taken incompetence to a staggering new level, in that they can't even blow themselves up in an intelligent way.

He was supposed to get all MAVERICK-Y on them (remind you of someone?) and instead did something that a trained chimp could do, which was buy them out. Last one before I go (I have to pee). The Leafs could have packaged their 7th pick (Kadri will not even get a sniff with the Leafs until MAYBE the 2010-11 season) and Schenn -- a 20 point a year defenseman -- to Tampa for the 2nd pick. And then they could have packaged the 2nd pick and Kaberle to the Isles for Tavares. And then they could have had the single best young player to come along since Sidney Crosby to build a team around. An actual franchise player worthy of the title. But noOooooooO. Schenn is NOT Bobby Orr and will never be. Burke is not acting in the best interests of the Leafs, Burke is acting in the best interest of Burke. I don't really CARE (and I would imagine most people here who have suffered through this team for centuries does either) whether Burke has a good reputation in the NHL community, and whether at his retirement party a parade of ex-players and agents and executives will parade up to the podium and say "that Brian Burke was truly a man of integrity." I want the team to WIN instead. Ohhh I have to pee so bad now. And it's going to be an ANGRY pee.

Let me guess, you have one of those sad little Leaf flags on the side of your car, right? Maybe went to Home Depot to get "Maple Leaf Blue" for your shack? Listen little one and learn. Schenn wasn't even a Calder Troophy finalist. The 7th overall pick in a draft where the bottom fell out after the 5th pick might as well be the 12th. And while I appreciate what Kaberle brings to the table, the most attractive thing about him is NOT his game, but the value of his contract -- which is why he is so sought after by financially struggling teams who need to ice a top 2 defenseman for 25 minutes a game (or face fan revolt) and want to do it for under $4m a season. The reason the Leafs didn't get Tavares is becauses Burke opened up that hot air balloon (a.k.a. his mouth) and announced his intentions to try and get Tavares. This then gave Garth Snow (who is not the idiot GM he once was - he is a quick learner, unlike YOU, troll boy) all the incentive he needed to totally refuse to divulge who the Isles would pick, thereby preventing Burke from knowing whether he had to get to spot #2, or spot #1. Basically, Snow forced Burke to go to spot #1 only. Would Snow have tipped his hand if Burke SHUT HIS BIG MOUTH? It's possible. Things leak out. Agents talk...media people talk. But the moment Burke blustered his arrogant "we're going after Tavares" proclamation, it was sealed. He would have to make TWO deals instead of one -- first to #2, then to #1. So yeah, little soldier, I've forgotten more about the game of hockey than you'll ever know. Keep watching Leafs TV and drinking the kool aid. Without pathological "fans" like you, how could the Leafs lose so successfully for 40 years?

I am not sure why you had to make clear your toilet needs. It did rather water down your argument. Pardon the pun! Tavares is not any where near Crosby or Ovechkin in my view, but he is the best new young centre currently. I would rather have Kaberle on the team. One of the few D men that has a good upside on the Leafs. (understatement) I think that Grabovsky is, at best, a second line player for the Leafs. Therefore I do agree that we need a first line centre, this is NOT Kadri either. One can can envisage a trade of Kadri, a defender and a pick for a top centre. Dare I hope that this could be Tavares in the future?

Burke has said he builds from the goal out.. He's going after J.G. and if they sign him, have brought in a good prospect for goaltending.. He has obviously shored up on defence, getting the guys to shut down other teams. He has started making the moves for his shovel guys for the bottom two lines with Orr and possibly Stuart. This is not the team that is going to win the cup but he is building on it.. There are a lot of talented UFA's coming up within the next two years that I'm sure he will be gunning for, and then you have your top 2 scoring lines along with some of the young talent we now have. I don't recall saying Burke expects the cup next year, but he's trying to build a winner and get to the playoffs. Set the bar high, and although they may not reach it, your still looking good 3-4 years down the road. He has stocked the cupboard with young guys who will push for a roster spot. I'm not convinced Burke is the man, but he's done a good job with what he was left with. Six years down the road when the Leafs are continually in the playoffs with a contender year after year, people who want to criticize will be forced to shut up. You don't build a championship team overnight from scratch, and the people who think that is what he trying to do need to wake up. He realizes he is in a market that lives for hockey, and doesnt want to tank season after season like pittsburgh had the chance to do. He is trying to speed up the rebuilding process to please everyone, but it is exactly that.. A REBUILDING PROCESS!
