Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Dwayne Roloson made 26 saves as the New York Islanders tripped up the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-1, at Nassau Coliseum.

Blake Comeau had a goal and an assists while Trent Hunter and John Tavares each had a goal for the Islanders, who stopped a three-game slide.

"Two points are always going to be important," said New York head coach Scott Gordon. "We're in a situation where we have to aim for the eighth spot and there are a bunch of teams crammed in that area."

Niklas Hagman had the lone goal while Jonas Gustavsson stopped 20-of-22 shots in the loss for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped four of their last five.

"These bumps or whatever you want to call them are going to happen throughout the year," said Toronto head coach Ron Wilson. "It doesn't matter how good or bad you are, but we should know what our identity is and we didn't play to it tonight."

After a scoreless first period, the Islanders took a 1-0 lead as Hunter brought the puck out from the left boards to the left circle, dragged the puck back and snapped a wrister that beat Gustavsson to the short side 10:47 in.

Just 90 seconds later, New York made it a 2-0 game as Tavares' wrister found the back of the net for his 16th goal of the season.

Roloson, who made five stops in the first period, made eight saves in the second to keep Toronto off the board.

Toronto made it a one-goal game just 1:56 into the final period as Hagman beat Roloson with a wrister for his 16th goal of the season.

The Maple Leafs, though, were unable to net the equalizer despite a power play later in the third and pulling Gustavsson late in the game, which resulted in Comeau's empty-netter to seal the win for the Islanders.
