Leafs prepared to trade up for Tavares

Michael Traikos, Canwest News Service

Published: Tuesday, April 14, 2009

TORONTO - For the second straight year, the Toronto Maple Leafs are slated to select seventh overall at the NHL entry draft. But when Brian Burke was asked whom he intends to choose, the general manager said John Tavares.

Canada's John Tavares celebrates with the Canadian flag and his gold medal after defeating Sweden to win the gold medal game at the 2009 IIHF U20 World Junior Hockey Championships in Ottawa, January 5, 2009.

It sounded more like a warning than wishful thinking.

Though Tavares is expected to be chosen no later than second overall, Burke believes he has the resources - and reputation - to pull off a major coup and land the potential franchise forward.

"We're going to talk to everyone between us and the first pick and see what the landscape is," he said in a season-ending news conference at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday. "We're going to see what it costs, and we're going to try to move up."

The New York Islanders, who finished with the worst record in the regular season, won Tuesday night's draft lottery. They will pick first at the June 26 draft in Montreal, followed by Tampa Bay, Colorado, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Phoenix

The Leafs had the seventh overall pick last year, but were able to trade up and draft defenceman Luke Schenn at No. 5. Of course, improving by two positions is easier than six.

Burke's history of swinging successful draft-day deals - while GM of the Hartford Whalers in 1993, he moved up from sixth to second overall to select Chris Pronger - is the reason why he is being so candid about his intentions this summer.

"We're not going to ambush anyone," he said. "I've done this a couple of times. I'm not going to be able to sneak up on anyone, so we're just going to announce it today. If I thought there was a tactical advantage to doing this quietly, I wouldn't be telling you guys what the strategy is."

Burke's strategy is pretty straightforward.

Anyone not named Schenn is likely up for grabs. So, too, are the two second-round draft picks he acquired at the trade deadline. And, with Toronto operating well below the salary cap, the Leafs might also be willing to take back costly contracts.

"It's like farming," Burke said. "A lot of work goes into farming and the harvest only takes a couple of days. Well, it's like that with the draft."

Before Burke starts planting seeds, he first needs to find out whether teams prefer Tavares or six-foot-six Swedish defenceman Victor Hedman.

"I'm not confident that everyone has John Tavares at No. 1," he said. "If they're going to take a different guy, then you don't have to get the first pick. You have to talk to the people involved and see how candid they will be."

"We'll see what we can do."

Give up Burke
Tue, Apr 14, 09 at 02:43 PM
Please go away Mr. Burke, this is the most exciting time of the year for real hockey fans and just because Toronto are out as usual in April don't spoil it for the rest of us. Why are you getting the hopes up of your loyal followers? You will not get Tavares because your system is bone dry and you have nothing to give up in return. Do you really think a team like the Islanders are simply going to give you Tavares, Mike Milbury is not there anymore and even he isn't that stupid, or is he.

There are also reports of Lecavallier trade in the works, hope both articles are true, Montreal, we will make the draft in your building Leafs Day.

Montreal fans are really going to be in shock after next week, Boston will take us without a sweat, then Toronto will own the draft.

Brian Burke already won here, as Tampa Bay said if they are in position to draft Taveras or Schenn, Lecavallier will become a Leaf.

...when there's no hope in sight, I guess you have to do/say something to drum up a glimmer, even as unrealistic and miraculous as it seems...without Burkey manufacturing any buzz, there would be little else Laughs nation would have to continue their delusional notions that their sorry team will actually be competitive in this lifetime....

OMG Leafs do not have anything to help the Islanders. Did anybody else see the leafs miss the playoffs also. Tavaras is not going to be a Leafs garrenteed!
Draft Choice
Tue, Apr 14, 09 at 04:10 PM
Brian Burke might have a plan for rebuilding the Leafs, but evidently he's no "master builder". At this late stage to all of a sudden decide to fight to better position the Maple Leafs for the Tavares sweepstake (from the seventh picking position) is asinine. Burke should have thought long and hard about the ramifications of racking up wins! This is the same Brian Burke who just last week reamed his troops out for not making the playoffs. What hypocrisy! This was the year that everyone expected the Leafs to finish in the basement and doing so would have been rather advantageous to the immediate future of the organization with the Likes of Tavares there for the picking. A more prudent strategy would have been to follow Washington's pre-lockout campaign of having a "fire wagon sale to both stock up on draft picks and better manage the "wins /loses ratio to facilitate drafting either first or second. Even though hog-tied by the Frozen Four and that obstinate former captain, one would think that Leaf management would have handled this attempt at acquiring Tavares more effectively. Funny, how all of a sudden the likes of the Islanders and the Lightening look so fortunate. Sure hope Burke has got another of those smooth maneuvers up his sleeves come draft day.
Burke screwed himself
Tue, Apr 14, 09 at 04:57 PM
Leafs should have played Pogge against the teams under them. Then, the leafs would have finished lower, in the standings. Burke, obviously, cannot play cards. It is too late now to move up un the draft.

I said it from the get go, Burke will right the Leafs ship and Gainey will sink the Habs one.

Tue, Apr 14, 09 at 05:08 PM
Our beloved Leafs, Canada's Team, are well postioned to make a charge for Boumeester & Camilleri come July 1st as well... It's all part of the master plan. Why else would Burke be signing so many undrafted college stars? He will package them off and move up in the draft.

Keep Dreaming
Tue, Apr 14, 09 at 05:24 PM
Brian Burke is the best GM in a while? doesn't say much with the goofs they have had there, but Cliff Fletcher is the only one in that entire organization that knows hockey is played on ice. Cliff has forgotten more about hockey than Burke knows. He builds winners (not inherits them)and was on the right track till MLSE decided they wanted to make a PR coup by signing this loudmouth. Sorry Burke, signing these College guys may buy you extra time with MLSE suits but real hockey fans know the difference.

Why do people still throw out the tank method and criticize Burke for not doing it? Has anyone suggesting such a thing even played hockey before? You play as hard as you can every game and try to win. Talk of throwing games and ripping on Burke for not doing so is exactly why so many people hate leaf fans. Who wants their team to lose? Was Ron supposed to go in the room and tell a group of pro athletes to take it easy and lose? Ridiculous. As for Fletcher, Stempniak? Great Deal, Ryan Hollweg? Great Deal, Jeff Finger? Jonas Frogren. Do I really need to go on? Burkie is trying to enrich the system and is doing a fine job thus far. He never said he would get Tavarres, all he said was that he wanted him much like every other GM other then number 1 does. I respect his wanting to move up in the draft. Every comment I've read on here is pure JFJ. Burkie never ripped his team for not making the playoffs, all he said was that every GM and hockey team wants to make the playoffs and he's disapointed they aren't and didn't. But who isn't? Fans, coaches and players alike. Some comments are good but too many of you need to give your head a shake.

The NY Islanders just made it known they would be willing to trade the pick for the right offer. Go Leafs.

Tue, Apr 14, 09 at 09:40 PM
This is very possible, Tampa and Toronto can swap their first round picks in exchange for salary (Malone)and Toronto can offer Islanders incentive to draft Hedman with the 1st overall pick, then the Leafs would draft, Tavares at #2, check and mate.

Burke is the man. He may not get Tavares, but guaranteed he'll do something to make us a better club. To the guy who says the leafs will be in the top 30 in 2011, very good observation!!

Why are we still talking about the Leafs with 3 Canadian teams in the playoffs?

Yes they are definately in the bottom part of the league *(for now)*, but anyone who has lost faith is not a real fan. He won't get Tavares, anyone who knows hockey realizes that, but there are many good players in this particular draft. Burke will pick the right one!!!

DREAMER: That's an easy statement. Unless there is expansion, all teams will be in the top 30. I believe that the leafs will be competitive in 2 years. I will bet any amount of money againsy anyone who states they will NEVER win the cup again. THats a sure winner bet.
Play Pogge more-finish last
Wed, Apr 15, 09 at 08:12 AM
Burke is an idiot. The leaf fans gave Burke the order"GET TAVARES". Burke gets the 7th. pick which, basically gives him a player who will be questinable. We need a guaranteed star player to build the leafs on. Burke should have played Pogge more.

Anyone who says to throw games should be ashamed of themselves. I don't want my team to ever loose a game. I have been a Leaf fan from Knee High. I remember the Leafs wining their last cup. And I went through some awful years with them. But I have never wanted them to loose not one single game. And every time they beat Montreal and Ottawa it is an absolute trill for me. Go Leafs Go

PFFT TYPICAL

its funny that these so called leaf fans are the first to bash the team they are rooting for. I guess because its easier to do so, or they are used to tanking it in their own lives that they see no other way out. Now it is a long shot for Tavares but the reality is that noone nowhere, whatever profession or position is untouchable. Tavares is not God. Hes not Gretzky or Ovetchkin. He is simply being bigged up by the Toronto media for being an Ontario native. Now he is 1st overall in this draft guarenteed, but the leafs have something more valuable and tempting than any other draft pick or player. The power of money. this gives burk a chance to go after Tavares for the 7th overall pick and Shenn, andCASH and Hedman and Malone, For Keberle, 2nd overall and a roster a rookie, and CASH. Now not exacally those trades but my point is if Burke is desperately going after Tavares he will give up more than the kid is worth making him touchable. Besides Toronto media have been following this kid for 3 to 4 years, Peddy has put together an elite management team lead by Burke to make this team a playoff success. I bet the fine print was Tavares is the next captain. PEACE
