Oilers not interested in Zherdev

Arbitration awards winger $3.9M deal

For any fans thinking that Nikolai Zherdev might be a fit with the Edmonton Oilers because the New York Rangers don't want him, forget it.

He's a square peg in a round hole.

While Zherdev might be intriguing on the wing because the Oilers have pulled out of the Dany Heatley trade with the Ottawa Senators, sources say Edmonton Oilers associate coach Tom Renney hasn't enthusiastically gone to bat for the enigmatic Ukrainian-born forward.

Renney is a players' coach, but his patience was stretched on Zherdev, a 24-year-old former first-round draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets, when Renney was the Rangers head coach.

An NHL arbitrator just awarded Zherdev a one-year, $3.9-million contract (he was looking for $4.75 million and the Rangers were offering less than $3.2 million), even though he slumped in the last few months of the regular season. He had no points in the Rangers' seven-game playoff loss to the Washington Capitals in Round 1, as well.

The Rangers, who gave up Fedor Tyutin to get Zherdev from Columbus in July 2008, are prepared to walk away from that arbitration award because they've signed Ales Kotalik to take his place. But they are trying to trade the winger before he becomes an unrestricted free-agent this morning.

The Oilers, who need a top six forward but struck out on Heatley, who may wind up in San Jose instead in a trade, could sign Zherdev or trade a forward to clear up some money. But, even if he was second to Nik Antropov on the Rangers with 58 points last season, they don't want him. He's got wonderful one-on-one skills but plays when the spirit moves him. He's also minus-46(plus-minus rating) in his five NHL seasons.

One team that is interested in Zherdev is the Toronto Maple Leafs. Leafs GM Brian Burke and Rangers'GM Glen Sather are buddies and co-own the junior Chilliwack Bruins. Toronto might be willing to give up defenceman Ian White or winger Lee Stempniak in a trade for Zherdev.

Wow The Edmonton Journal Must be an interesting paper. Trading Ian White for Zherdev? That's ridiculous. I know we need top 6 forwards but if we sign this guy we might as well have kept Antropov...Burke isn't stupid! Please make more unsubstantiated claims based on who are "buddies"
Agreed

Great call Leafsfan90. This is about as "substantial" as Garrioch writing that Montreal is the 3rd team in the three-team deal that has Heatley going to SJ.

I don't think Burke would give up much, if anything for Zherdev. I mean, Ron Wilson demands consistency and strong work ethic and this guy is a floater as Don Cherry would say. First time Wilson got in his face about something, he'd sulk the rest of the game. Ian White has become a hard working reliable defenceman under Wilson and Burke knows that too.

Trade Stempniak for Zherdev, only adding about 1.5 million to the payroll. Stempniak had his chance in T.O. but failed. Zherdev will get a chance to prove himself under Ron Wilson, but will be out the door after a year if he fails to impress. Burke has to take a chance on a young skilled player like Zherdev.
is the right price?

Zherdev wants more than the $3.9 million/season he was awarded through arbitration. But with the Rangers exercising their right to walk away, he becomes an unrestricted free agent who is unlikely to even get close to the $3.2 million that Rangers had submitted. 23 goals and 58 points earns you Ponikarovsky type money and he makes $2.1 million.

Zherdev is not a good fit for the leaf's. Wilson wouldn't take his slacking off or pouting when he gets the press box. Burke: Don't do it. White is still developing and he looks good.

If Montreal signed Zherdev, it would make the terrible Scoot Gomez trade less embarrassing.

I don't think the oilers are going to be getting zherdev because they already have a over-paid underachiever they can't get rid of in Dustin Penner.

Would you be interested in swapping Dustin Penner and his $4.25 million paycheque for Jeff Finger and his $3.50 million one? You guys finally rid yourselves of your favorite whipping boy Penner, add a decent blueliner with size and experience and save $750,000. Do we have a deal?
Burke watch "Slapshot" too much

Burkie, who always looks "loaded" wants to load the Maple leafs with players that have size but no talent.I predict a boatload of fighting and a string of losses equalling an NHL record in 2009-10 for the leafs.

Leafs may acquire him. He's second line material or 3rd. Has potential and is a better skater than NA. Leafs need to get rid of I.White or another forward. Signing him would make sense if Burke deems him a valuable part of the rebuilding process. Otherwise he's probably going to end up playing in the KHL.

Zherdev is an intriging option, but he doesn't fit with Wilson and Burke's 'Play hard or go home' mentality. Giving up White would be stupid. He is a versatile player who is still developing.

Keep White. As for Zherdev, if the Leafs sign him, make it a one year deal at $2 million with performance incentives and see what he does

You say that Penner is an over-paid underachiever. Maybe you should stop listening to the local media. The guy has better stats than Rolston in NJ and makes less. He'll finally have a great year without MACT holding the players back.

You are comparing the mighty Penner to a mid to late 30 year old, washed up Brian Rolston? LOL Whatever helps you sleep at night. LOL

the leafs need to sign or trade for Zherdev (id trade Stepniak for sure, not White) and a trade for Sharp should be done if makes sense, with Zherdev, possibly Sharp and Kessel it would be unreal, dont trade Kaberle unless you can get Kessel... players like Stepniak and even Stajan need new homes, and Pogge should be used as trade bait as well... however, you gotta admit Zherdev would fit great in T.O because of his youth and great potential, and he would get lots of ice time, im saying perfect move if Burke can get him in a signing or trade for Stepniak, a big steal and nice move it would be for sure... Leafs for playoffs and hopefully cup in the next 3 years, hoping...
Dump Stepniak
Tue, Aug 4, 09 at 09:04 PM
What happended Lee?? You underperformed last year, had your chance, now you could be the deal that brings Zherdev to T.O. Is Zherdev the next Stepniak? Either way, keep White, dump Stepniak if you can!!

The leafs GM sucks ass? the leafs will be top 3 in toughest team to play against this year. For me in what 6 months of Burkie being Gm of the leafs thats quite an accomplishment already. To come in overhaul the weakest team with the poorest defence in the league to yet to be determined but looks like a pretty solid defence core adn atleast for now on paper one of the toughest teams in the NHL thats pretty good, I say Sign Zherdev now that hes an UFA, possible with the likes of grabovski and kulemin, Zherdev would be a nice fit with them on a line, could be a potential first line future for the leafs. If Zherdev signs you dont have to worry about his work ethic because IM sure before he even signs hes going to be told u either work or your not playing, Im sure he knows Burke and Wilson mean business, they showed it all year with benching blake, stajan, Kaberlae and many others. I say Sign him for 3.8/ 1 year deal, if he doesnt work out, Trade bait at the trade deadline, or use him as a trade to move up in the draft next year. DONT get rid of White or Kabby unless its going to bring you back a top line forward. Stempniak is underrated. I can deal with getting rid of him. But keep white for sure. Grabovski 20 goals next year, Kulemin 20 goals next year, poni 32 next year and blake if he doesnt have his attitude, he will get atleast 30 next year. Kaberlae will have his best year in the NHL. Call me a liar, come back in March at the end of regular season, and tell me you arent watching the leafs in playoffs this year.

If i was burke i would get him but will not give up Ian white. Hes young and maybe someone can put a fire in him. Also his worth is at most 2.5 nothing more for the points he put up.

Like I said, I hear rumors that Sharp will possibly be traded to T.O, The Kaberle Kessel trade is in talks, and IMO Kessel is 21 is a proven player and gets over 35 goals a year and over 70 points, i would trade my first round pick for that especially this year cuz the leafs wont have as good of a pick, and Zherdev i believe will sign with the leafs or a trade will be happening any day now.. people dont forget that leaf blueline is kind of crowded...
