Leafs' Kaberle on way out?

Burke listens to offers for veteran defender as he tries to move up

MONTREAL-The NHL draft begins at 7 p.m. tonight. Tomas Kaberle may no longer be a Maple Leaf at 7:01.

The window to trade the all-star defenceman opens when the draft begins and GM Brian Burke admitted last night he's weighing an unsolicited offer that would see a player and a draft pick come back to the Leafs.

"My inclination still is someone is going to have to blow our doors off to make this deal," said Burke. "It's going to have to be a trade we absolutely feel we have to make. It's got our attention. We're listening now. The name that was thrown at us was important enough that we have to huddle on it."

Burke said the trade could get better, and he immediately notified four other teams about the offer, hoping to get an even better deal.

There would be no shortage of teams lining up to take the all-star defenceman, who has two years left at a very affordable $4.25 million (U.S.) a year. One source said Kaberle's name has been mentioned in every trade offer involving Tampa as Burke tries to move up from the seventh pick overall to try to land centre John Tavares.

The Florida Panthers are looking to replace soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Jay Bouwmeester, and could want to reunite Kaberle with long-time playing partner Bryan McCabe.

The cost-conscious Phoenix Coyotes - with a surfeit of young players but lacking a veteran presence on the blue line - and Minnesota Wild - with two solid goaltenders - were also believed to be in the running.

Kaberle signed a no-trade deal as part of his contract, but because the Leafs missed the playoffs, a window to trade him - as well as fellow blueliner Pavel Kubina - opens today when the draft begins. It closes in mid-August.

Burke has previously said he'd be unwilling to trade Kaberle, because his skill set would be so hard to replace, especially at his salary.

Meanwhile, Burke said he's operating on "blind hope" that he'll be able to move up in the draft, but admitted it's looking bleak.

"I don't think the Islanders are moving their pick," said Burke. "The only name Tampa's expressed interest in is Luke Schenn and he's not going anywhere. That probably leaves us out of the top two picks, but we'll see.

"No luck so far, but the way the timing on this works, it's still early," Burke added.

The Islanders hold the first overall pick and haven't tipped their hat as to which way they're leaning - Tavares, Swedish defenceman Victor Hedman or perhaps Brampton centre Matt Duchene.

"Wherever I go, I know it'll be a great spot," said Tavares. "There's a lot of great players in the draft.

"I'd like to go No. 1, no doubt. If it happens, it would be a great accomplishment. If it doesn't, we'll just move ahead."

Tavares said he's flattered the way Burke is pursuing him.

"I can't wait to be part of the National Hockey League," said Tavares. "If it is Toronto, having grown up in Oakville watching the Leafs, it would be special for me, but we'll see what happens."

Tampa holds the second pick, Colorado the third. Atlanta is said to be leaning towards Evander Kane with the fourth pick, leaving Burke in a position to try to trade up to fifth to get Brayden Schenn, Luke's brother. Last year, the Leafs traded up from seven to five to get Luke.

"We're not trading Luke Schenn," said Burke. "We worked very hard to get him last year. We think he could be our captain in the next two or three years."

Burke would love to build the team around Schenn and Tavares.

"We're trying to move up. If we're not successful, we'll move on," said Burke. "I'm not discouraged yet. But I'm not optimistic. We've been approached about moving down. We'd entertain that. ... Until someone calls out that kid's name, we're going to keep trying."

I thought Pat Quinn and JFJ were like twin clowns. Brian Burke tops them. Why is this guy the highest paid GM in the NHL. I'm convinced MLSE are comfortable losing. Can't wait until we get a second team in this town. Leafs Suck!!!

You picked a stinker in Kadri, Montreal was promised trades and we got nothing. You are right, as long as we keep putting fannies in seats they dont care about winning.

Of course Burke is all talk! He's got zero vision. What fool tries to win meaningless games knowing you're not going to make the palyoffs when there are players like Tavares, Hedman and Duchen sitting ready to be drafted? Look at Burkes face during the 1st. round draft, you'll see the face of a defeated man...looks more like a gambling addict who just bet his house in a card game.

Disappointment is the overwhelming sentiment at this point yes. Im surprised he did sweet FA. Though I never felt he coiuld deliver Tavares, I thought fer sure one of at least Schenn or Kassian would b a Leaf. Kadri doesn't seem like a player I thought the Leafs really needed. Oh well. Hope these 2nd rounders get used wisely. Not much to look forward to next year....yet.

Good thing Burke went out and got another smallish forward who likes the offensive part of the game but isn`t interested in playing the hard nosed hockey that won the Penguins the Cup. Don`t the leafs already have a player like this in Blake, Hagman, Grabovski, Kulemin, Tlusty, Stajan, and Stempniak already. I thought Toronto was going to become a tougher grinding team to play against, not the perimeter preferring squad I see here. Being able to score a few goals in the OHL (playing with Taveres) does not make you an NHL sniper. This was a real missed opportunity to grab a solid shut down defenceman in the 6`5 220 lbs Cowan. And he didn`t make any move to grab the trulucent Kassian either. Nor did he do anything like offer up a series of 2nd or 3rd round picks to grab the 6`3 215 lbs Ashton, when the projected middle teens power forward was still available at the 29th pick. Both frustrating and disappointing Burke.

on further research, it does sound like Kadri may have bit of jam about him. I can understand not drafting Cowan if he is going to be making a serious pitch for Bouwmeester but where indeed is the rest of this "hard nosed" quality BB preaches going to materialise from? If it's trade+free agency then it should be an interesting couple of weeks. As for Kadri, he'll be in junoir another year & hopefully have a great WJC. Looks like an intersting pick if a little off the radar.

I'm very disappointed in Burke's performance last night. There was a ton of talent in the first round. The Leaf's goal of acquiring building blocks for the new Leaf team was a dismal failure. Burke had opportunities to draft tough talented character players like Cowan, Kassian, Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, Kulikov etc, but he chose a player who projects to be a soft 2nd line centre. I'm sure Burke will go all out to sign free agents next month so Toronto will make the playoffs and make it difficult again to acquire the cornerstone players the team needs to rebuild.

get ready for our next team leaf fans!!! going to be all the cast off over aged players that Burk can fit under the cap to go along with the role model he picked up in the first round last night!!!!

I would try to trade Kabby and Kubina for a bevy of first round picks for 2010 and 2011... a time when the falling cap creates enormous free agent opportunities... the Leafs future is not now so let's not try to improve just enough to make the playoffs. Also, it wouldn't surprise me if something came together with T.O. and Buffalo that saw Kassian end up in blue and white. And there did all the Russians go? Perhaps we should have scouts over there trying to line up some good folks for the next time the thaw comes about between NHL and Russian hockey...

GOOD COMMENTS EVERYONE !! I've been a loyal Leaf fan for 59 years but VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH MR. BURKE.Just for example, The Detroit Red Wings management team has CLASS in how a hockey club is operated, etc. Mr. Ken Holland doesn't go around BSing everbody that I'm going to do this and I'm going to do that.I'm starting to think it's time for Leaf fans to stop going to games and let the leafs play to empty houses. Then and not until then will you see DRASTIC CHANGES!!
