Russia is looking to more than just the National Hockey League to help build its men’s Olympic hockey team.

The Russian Ice Hockey Federation announced Monday that 19 players from the NHL and 19 players from the Continental Hockey League — known as the KHL — will attend the team’s Olympic summer orientation camp from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 in Moscow.

Some of the NHL’s top forwards highlight the invitees, including Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, Atlanta Thrashers sniper Ilya Kovalchuk and Pittsburgh Penguins young gun Evgeni Malkin.

Among the players from the Canadian NHL teams are defencemen Denis Grebeshkov (Edmonton Oilers), Anton Volchenkov (Ottawa Senators) and Andrei Markov (Montreal Canadiens). Invites from the forward ranks include new Senator Alex Kovalev and Toronto’s Nikolai Kulemin.

Three of the four goaltenders to get the call are from the NHL, including Ilya Bryzgalov (Phoenix Coyotes), Simeon Varlamov (Washington Capitals) and Evgeni Nabokov (San Jose Sharks).

Russia captured the world championship this past spring in Switzerland.
