Canucks fight could get nasty in corners

Wellwood arbitration 'can be unpleasant' as player's conditioning issues and goal drought will be raised

"Both sides propose a salary based on an empirical search of data that garners a group of comparable players and he'll go in and make an argument that he feels he's worth a certain level and we will argue the inverse, we will argue that he is worth another certain level, and the arbitrator has the ability to choose our number which will obviously be lower, his number or anywhere in between," Gilman said.

Even once what Wellwood will be paid this season is settled, there are questions about just where he fits with the Canucks. Cody Hodgson, the team's impressive first-round pick in 2008, is expected to make the team and seems destined to be the Canucks' third-line centre this season. And with Ryan Johnson pencilled in as the fourth-line centre and Henrik Sedin and Ryan Kesler seemingly solidly entrenched as the first- and second-line centres, Wellwood doesn't seem to fit unless he moves over to play on the wing.

And as for Morrison, that mouse analogy suggesting he was riding the coat-tails of former linemates Bertuzzi and Naslund, didn't hurt him. Morrison ended up winning his case and earned a $1-million raise.

ICE CHIPS: The Canucks signed forward Kellan Tochkin to a free-agent contract Monday. The undrafted 18-year-old from Abbotsford scored 20 goals and 53 assists in 72 games with the WHL's Everett Silvertips last season.

You're screwed Welly, you should have just took what they offered because now you're going to get less. You're small & useless, not to mention you seemingly take a good pass and turn it into a suicide pass.

Greed will sink this stiff. stick a fork in him. enjoy UFA in the NHL ... the whole 2 minutes it lasts before you realize you just got yourself a one way ticket to the KHL (Kraft Dinner Hockey League). there the Russian Bear will whip you into shape Fudge Pudge.

The out of shape stuff was trumped up by the club last year for use now during arbitration. This guy can play...the less head games the club employs the more productive he'll be - he's a smart kid. Let's see how smart Gillis is. After signing Raycroft I have my doubts.

There is only one problem with both parties here - they both think they're better than they are. And what makes them think like this is fans that were saying they would win the Stanley Cup right after sundin was signed. Wellwood, the team and especially their fans can be summarized in one word - PATHETIC !!!

He's a good guy getting bad advice. For those of us out here in Reality World, having an off year and still getting offered a $3000 raise would grabbed up faster than the last beer at a college party!

If Scott Gomez can make almost $8 mil in todays NHL, Wellwood earning $1.5 mil is very reasonable. The Canucks are just trying to short-change Wellwood because they had to break the bank to put all that money in the pockets of the two sisters. No doubt it'll come back to bite them on the arse and they'll be stuck with those two playoff stiffs forever.

Anyone know why Jacques Laperriere is having all of his stuff auctioned off at Habs inside/out site. Is the man broke.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Wellwood had "an off year". "Unbalanced is more accurate. He did register a career high eighteen goals and there were stretches when he was one of the best Canucks followed by long scoreless draughts. And he played better than Sundin in the playoffs who made off with $5 million. I'd say the Canucks owe Kyle from last year.

Welly should accept the 1 mil contract because if he gets a settlement for more, he becomes trade bait. Either way, he's just stuck his head up the back door!

Wellfeed should be happy with what the Canucks were paying him last year. He deserves a minimal increase, if that.

He really needs to focus on hockey not on the hockey lifestyle. I can only imagine what his brother will be like after reading the article saying that Eric thought Kyle was a really big help with training and understanding the rigors of the NHL... WOW If Eric is delusional the only rigors Kyle knows are the rigors of fitting into his under Armour after the off season. BYe Bye Wellfed!!!

I've heard the all-you-can-eats in Vancouver now have a No-Kyle-Wellwood clause, so he needs a raise to open his own.

I don't cheer for the Canucks and I don't really care about Kyle Wellwood, but it's pretty funny to read and hear about his supposed "conditioning" problems. Right now, he's listed at 5-10, 180. Every player carries their weight differently, but that doesn't seem like an outrageous number. I assume that was his weight at the end of training camp last year (I don't think the NHL updates player weights throughout the year). And if you look at pictures of Wellwood, it's not like there's a double-chin there or anything. I think an awful lot of people have misinterpreted a "conditioning problem" (such as a bad V02 max) with a weight problem. I don't remember what nasty things the Leafs said about him, but it's a little sad that he has to live with a reputation created by somebody's pearl of wisdom in Toronto.

Actually all the "Wellfed" stuff didn't come from Toronto. It was kind of an unspoken thing that Wellwood had a conditioning problem but the worst attack actually came from his father in an interview with the Toronto media. It was only after he went to Vancouver off of waivers and showed up to camp out of shape that he got the reputation. It was like spitting in the face of his last chance. Fortunately he's a pretty good hockey player. And his weight isn't the issue, it was his near failure to meet minimum standards on the Canucks fitness testing. Things like VO2 max, strength and endurance were all apparently alarming for the Canucks.

Scott in Grande Prairie - Wellfed's 'listed' as 5'10 and 180lbs? And NHL teams's PR dept. NEVER exagerate on height or weight, right? I saw Wellfeed on the street when he was with Toronto - if he's 5' 10 and 180lbs, I'm Brad Pitt.

Hey, listen, I'm not taking 5-10, 180 lbs as the gospel truth but I also refuse to believe he's the tub-o-lard everyone makes him out to be. As for what he looks like in steet clothes, well, you might have been surprised by Ray Bourque's double-chin and big hockey butt, too. Or Brad Park's pudginess. Or Phil Esposito's "burliness." Fitness testing is also only one part of what makes a pretty good hockey player. Ask anyone in Edmonton and they'll tell you that it was a rare day when No. 99 PASSED a fitness test in the old days. Wellwood's not No. 99, obviously, but I'm just not sure how effective it will be if the Canuckleheads play the "weighting" game in Wellwood's arbitration case.

It is said that Guy Lefleur use to suck back two cigarettes during the intermission then go out and use the opposition as pylons. My cousin was a chum of Wellwood's when he was with the Leafs and once mentioned that Kyle had a bit of a gut. His face is slimmer now so I would imagine that the gut should be as well. Canucks fans are strange - you'd eat your young.

Scott in Grande Prairie, fair enough, but also look at the guys you used in your comparison to Wellfeed - Bourque, Park and Esposito (3 HOF'ers and 2 Stanley Cup winners)...When Wellfeed produces and wins like those 3, then he might have some leverage when it comes to salary arbitration...
