If the disgruntled winger is not dealt by then, he'll be back to play for the team, the Ottawa Senators general manager said.

"At some point, we have to let the fans know," Murray said during a conference call with fans.

Murray said he continues to talk to a couple of teams, but that he's no closer to making a deal.

His primary concern is to make the sure that any "return is a good one."

Murray said he'll put in place a cutoff date, after which it will be determined that Heatley will return to the Senators and "be an important member of our club."

The team's main training camp begins on Sept. 12.

nice try Murray,if you think you can lever a trade that easily ...Very few teams want a pouty baby (even a very talented one) to poison the dressing room, and fewer still if any will pay a premium.Methinks you will have this particula problem for a while

grow some cojones...send the proper maessage...work his tail off in practice and dress him for every game....but he never ,ever under any circumstance gets off the bench until his attitude changes. He signed a contract and must live up to it

This is so lame, coming from a GM who should have gotten his walking papers months ago. As if a drop dead date will make a difference in this situation? Murray is so out of the loop it makes you wonder.

Is that drop dead date a threat, Bryan? Should we now look for a major deal? What a snow job - such unbelievable BS.

Murray: Make the best deal available, BUT MAKE IT!! The savings from his salary alone will give you money to get some players who want to play for your team.

Hey Murray. If someone on the Ottawa staff wasn't such a limelight seeking blabber mouth who had to run to the press about Healtey wanting a trade, you wouldn't have any problem. Why don't you let us all know who the real cause of all your problems is. Unless of course it is you or your or owner

This mess isn't Murray's making, and there is no way in hell the trade demand was leaked from the Sens head offce. It has become abundantly clear that Heatley is as dim as they come, so it should be no surprise to know that the leak came from them. This is a good move from a good, veteran hockey man. Grow up and buy some glasses if you can't see so good...

It makes poor strategic sense for Murray to have said this. He may have thought that it would place pressure on the Heatley camp, but it puts him and the organization "over the barrel" as well - And would make them look like fools if this backfires and escalates into what may well become a season-long fiasco. He may also be forced to lower his expectations, with regard to the compensation he expects, and eventually eat his words if he is shunned by other GM's who may realize he's painting himself into a corner. Best to show flexibility and discretion, and be rid of the situation, rather than saddle the club with an entire season of discontent and distraction. Just saying - Talking tough is going to make the deal that much more difficult to do.

It does not make any sense at all to have Danny H. back into the dressing room in Ottawa. A. Kovalev has also stated he would prefer to be in Montreal to end his playing days. Two guys on one team that really do not want to be there! B. Murray should get on the telephone to Bob Gainey and try to make a blockbuster deal for these two disgruntled forwards. Montreal has players that Ottawa could take in return for fair value and the trade would benefit both teams. The fans in Montreal would be happy getting Kovalev back and then they would have their captain too. Can the GMs in Montreal and Ottawa lower their egos to make such a deal? I would hope that they could, but in reality I doubt it.

Once again, we are bearing witness to the single worst GM in the league since Mike Milbury.

Bryan Murray is going to likely have to face the fact that all the other 29 teams know he's in a bind to trade Heatley and so he's not likely to get fair market value in return.

I think Murray is responsible for a lot of the Sens problems. However I agree with this move. It puts the ball back in Heatleys court. He now must go to camp play his tail off and make himself more attractive for a trade. Allowing the Sens to get a fairer deal than what is out there right now.

In my opinion, if a player wants to break his contract, he should have to buy his way out of it and become a free agent. A player demanding a trade will nullify his no trade clause.

Only way to make your point is to send him to the minors. If he refuses to report then suspend him. If he reports have him suit up & sit on the bench until there is a power play. All things take time to resolve.

Dany Heatley has been traded to Edmonton is a three team deal, Plekanec and others going to Ottaw and the Habs acquire Horcoff.

Idea: Pay A Fan his entire year's salary and sit his stupid teammate-murdering carcass in the press box or demote him to junior! What a first rate suck. In economic times like this, he is a sickening example to children.
Oh so many ignorant posts
Mon, Aug 31, 09 at 06:36 PM
How is any of this Murray's fault? He got a baby in Heatley and now has to clean up an unexpected mess from a traitorous, ingrateful twerp. The deal he worked out with Edmonton would have been great - undone by the same weasel. Bringing Leclaire to Ottawa was brilliant and should pay dividends, and he has shored up the porous defence in the post-Redden era pretty nicely. And for the last bloody time, Dany has a no-trade, one way contract - they cannot send him to the minors or anywhere else he doesn't want to go. Murray architected the Ducks and brought them their cup - he had fewer primadonas to deal with there, though...

There comes a time when you need to cut your losses. You dont want heatley to cause anymore problems in the dressing room. So, you make a play to get something back and then look at signing Comrie/Sykora to help your scoring. The problem with ottawa has been the lack of scoring after heatley/spezza/alfredsson. So, you need to go out and balance your attack i just dont want cheechoo, but,i would take michalek/sevitugchi and a prospect or make a trade with rangers for dubinski and drury. Drury is overpaid, but, atleast he brings it every night.

The difference between a one way and a two way contract is monetary If you sign a 2 way you get paid an NHL salary and if you grt sent down you get your minor league contract kiks in. One way means you get your NHL money even if you are sent down. Heatley can be sent to the minors. Any major leaguer going down has to clear waivers and can be picked up by another team at no cost.

I know that he asked to be traded but I'm surprised by the reaction. It was the Sens who made the request public-not Heatley, but they are being portrayed as victims...

Gotta laugh at all you house league coaches giving your ten cents worth of advice. Heatley isn't a cry-baby, nor is he a suck or poison in the dressing room. It's the Sens organization that is faulty. Spezza is next!

I agree with your advice to remedy this Heatley situation, but the devil will be handing out popsicles in hell before Murray and Gainey break bread to discus that kind of trade. Way too much ego as you suggested. An dwhat a joke about Kovalev. Just goes to show you that Ottawa is viewed as just a watering hole by most players.

You're right about the 1-way versus 2-way. I meant to say he has a 'no movement' clause which does in fact mean that he cannot be sent down to the minors. The point was valid - stop splitting hairs...
re ignorant post
Mon, Aug 31, 09 at 11:48 PM
you are right about the no movement clause my mistake. However I think you are wrong about Murray. Ottawa has been a train wreck after he put the knife in Mucklers back. Four coaches including himself in 4 years the Emery ficasco giving anybody a no movement clause are few of the reasons this guy is incompetent

Yeah, Heatley's a baby, but really, how has this Murray guy kept his job while everyone around him - Jacques Martin, Hartsburg - takes the fall. If Melnyk were as bright as he thinks he is, he'd turf this clown and tell Clouston to figure out a way to keep the best player happy.

Heatly asks for a trade. Murray says he has a drop dead date or not trade but who is hosting the trade if not Murray. What a gong show.

The Sens made the trade public - not Heatley or his agent. Let some of this fall on the Sens mgnt shoulders - not ALL on Dany.

Heatley kills people. He really does.

Tue, Sep 1, 09 at 02:50 PM
Everybody already knows it was Heatley's camp who made the trade request public. Think about it. The Sens would have absolutely zero to gain if they had done it. Heatley on the other hand was letting every GM in the league know he was available. I don't blame Heatley actually for this blunder, I blame his representatives.

We now have one of the best teams in the league thanks to Burkie, and adding Heatley to Leafs will bring us the Cup. He can put that rubber into the old onion bag and his 55-60 goals will put it away for us.

Tue, Sep 1, 09 at 07:10 PM
oh yeah, meant to mention...burke and the leafs should not require money compensation for coyotes to move to hamilton..do something for the fans... coyotes protect one player, then leafs select one of coyotes players...repeat a second time, then coyotes agree to giving their 1st rounder to leafs every 3 yrs for 9 yrs (3 picks total) and that is it... no one cares about coyotes or hamilton or ottawa or heatley, leaf fans get something to improve team and MLG won't lose a fan or a dollar, what do you all think
@josarelli

Give it a break, dude! That the Leafs would be so privileged to have Heatley's services. Selfish Mats Sundin his ancient history and not since Gilmour have the Leafs had an elite forward. Why would Heatley wanna come to Toronto to play with bums?!
