VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps have opted for youth in addressing their depth at right back, obtaining Canadian international Fraser Aird on a season-long loan, with a transfer option, from the Glasgow Rangers of the Scottish Championship league.

"We're delighted to bring Fraser into our club," Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said in a statement issued by the club of the speedy 20-year-old who also plays on the wing. "He is a bright young Canadian talent with great energy in his play and great character. He is still learning the game and hopefully we can help his talent progress. Fraser can play a variety of positions, but we'll be looking for him to compete in the right back area."

The Caps, who have Costa Rican international Jordan Smith pencilled in at the position, traded away veteran starter Steven Beitashour to Toronto FC earlier this month.

"I'm delighted to have joined Vancouver Whitecaps FC on a season-long loan," Aird said in a statement. "Hopefully I can come in and help the team and improve as a player under Carl Robinson. I'm looking forward to meeting up with the group and getting started right away."

Aird, who has spent his entire career with Rangers, will arrive in Vancouver Saturday and travel with the team to Tucson, Ariz., for a pre-season camp.

Aird was born in Scarborough, Ont., to Scottish parents and grew up in Canada before joining the Rangers program at age 16.

After playing for Canada at various youth levels, he made his senior international debut last October in a 1-1 draw with Ghana. He was also called up to the Canadian squad for their recent World Cup qualifiers against Honduras and El Salvador.

Aird was a nominee for the 2015 Canadian Under-20 Player of the Year award.
