VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Canucks have locked up a younger member of the team's core, announcing Tuesday that defenceman Chris Tanev has signed a five-year contract extension worth $22.25 million, or a salary cap hit of $4.45 million per season.

Tanev, 25, plays a shutdown role on the Canucks' first pairing alongside Alex Edler and is a key part of the NHL's third best penalty-killing unit.

With the deal, Tanev is poised to join the "$4 million-plus" club on the Canucks' blue line. Edler leads that contigent with an annual cap hit of $5 million, followed by veterans Kevin Bieksa at $4.6 million and Dan Hamhuis at $4.5 million. The latter two will be in the final year of their deals next season.

"Chris has developed into an excellent NHL defenceman and is an extremely important part of our team," Canucks general manager Jim Benning said in a statement. "He's a player you want on the ice in the most critical points of a game and we're excited about having him with our group as we continue to play to win today, with an eye to the future.”

A native of Toronto, Tanev was never drafted into the NHL and was a college free agent in 2010 when the Canucks signed him out of the Rochester Institute of Technology. In 216 NHL games, Tanev has collected 10 goals and 33 assists, but his value to the team is more as a defender and puck mover. He leads the Canucks in blocked shots with 153.
