So, how is your week going? Probably a whole lot better than the Vancouver Canucks’.

Their week started with a 4-1 loss Sunday to the San Jose Sharks, when they blew another third-period lead. And then on Monday -- well, you know what happened, or more precisely didn’t happen, on Monday.

Which brings us to Tuesday night, when the Canucks scored five goals. Unfortunately, three of them went into their own net as Vancouver fell 3-2 to the New York Islanders at Rogers Arena.

The Canucks deserved better. They carried the play most of the night, had a 6-2 edge in shots in the first period and a 19-11 advantage after two periods.

But those three own goals, deflections off the stick of Dan Hamhuis, the skate of Ben Hutton and the body of Chris Tanev, were the difference.

“The puck was bouncing today and we were a little unfortunate, but that’s hockey,” said Vancouver goalie Jacob Markstrom. “I thought we played a great hockey game today.”

Defenceman Thomas Hickey scored the winner at 12:55 of the third period on a point shot that hit Tanev on its way past Markstrom.

Two minutes earlier, Daniel Sedin had tied the game for the Canucks, banking a shot from behind the goal-line off New York goalie Thomas Greiss for his 24th of the season.

“They made it 3-2 pretty quickly after our tying goal and that was disappointing,” said Daniel. “Like I said, if we play like this we’ll get our wins. But obviously this is disappointing.”

The Islanders had only one shot in the first 18:50 of the first period. It was a goal, mind you, off a shot that bounced off the stick of Hamhuis and past Markstrom at 4:20 of the first.

The goal was credited to New York defenceman Travis Hamonic, who took the shot from the right faceoff circle.

Markstrom didn’t make his first save until there was just 1:10 left in the first.

“The team was playing great, you can’t be selfish and ask for warm-up shots, it’s not going to come in this league,” Markstrom said of his light workload in the first.

The first period ended 1-1, thanks to a Linden Vey power-play goal at 10:42. This time, the Canucks got a nice bounce. A Hutton shot bounced off Hamonic to Vey, who swatted it past Greiss.

But the Isles took a 2-1 lead at 14:29 of the second when an Anders Lee shot ricocheted off Hutton and past Markstrom. It looked like Markstrom had made the save, but an official review clearly showed the puck had crossed the line before Markstrom got his glove on it.

“It was hard to tell, I really didn’t see the puck after I tried to put my glove on top of it,” Markstrom said. “But you could clearly see (in the replay) that it crossed the line.”

Winger Jannik Hansen suffered an injury in the morning skate and that led to some line-juggling for Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins. Emerson Etem replaced Hansen on right wing with the Sedins.

“It was more exciting than nerve-wracking,” Etem said of playing with the twins for the first time. “Jannik does a great job in finding those holes when Danny and Hank are moving the puck around and that’s what I tried to do. After the first period we seemed to gain momentum and feed off each other a little bit more.”

Defenceman Yannick Weber played right wing on the fourth line with Jared McCann and Alex Burrows. Bo Horvat and Sven Baertschi were split up. Horvat skated on a line with Vey and Derek Dorsett, while Baertschi joined Markus Granlund and Jake Virtanen.

The game had some bite it to it. Etem fought Hamonic and Dorsett tangled with Matt Martin in pair of second-period scraps.

“I think he maybe thought I went a little high there on (Calvin) de Haan,” Etem said. “I was just following through on my check. I am not a dirty player or anything like that. He came after me and I’m not going to back down.”

ICE CHIPS: Tuesday’s game was Vancouver’s last against an Eastern Conference opponent this season. Vancouver went 13-12-7 versus the East this season. Last season, the Canucks were 21-10-1 against eastern opponents. . .

Hutton logged a season-high 25:03 of ice time for the Canucks.
