CALGARY — Vancouver Canucks winger Alex Burrows has been cleared by the NHL to play in Tuesday’s Game 4 of their playoff series against the Calgary Flames.

Burrows received an instigator penalty when he fought Calgary defenceman Kris Russell at 18:35 of the third period of Sunday’s 4-2 loss to the Flames. Instigator calls carry an automatic one-game suspension if they are incurred in the final five minutes of a game.

But for the second time in this series, the NHL has struck down the suspension that normally accompanies an instigator call. Calgary defenceman Deryk Engelland had his instigator call in Game 2 rescinded by the NHL.

John Dellapina, the NHL vice president of communications noted that the instigator suspension rule contains a line saying "pending review of the league."

"The league is not going to enforce the suspension," Dellapina said today.

The ruling is good news for a Canucks team that could use some. After dropping a 4-2 decision to the Flames in Game 3, Vancouver trails the series 2-1.

The Canucks and Flames have combined for 243 penalty minutes in the first three games of the series. Calgary has 131 penalty minutes, while Vancouver has 112.
