THE MATCHUP

The Canucks surrendered a late winning goal in Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to the New York Islanders, who put all three pucks in off Vancouver defencemen. The Canucks are 2-7-1 at Rogers Arena the last 10 games, and a desultory 11-15-5 at home this season. The Sharks hammered the Montreal Canadiens 6-2 in California on Monday, and their 22-9-3 road record is second in the NHL. San Jose is 16-4-4 the last eight weeks.

HEAD TO HEAD

The Canucks allowed four unanswered third-period goals in a 4-1 loss to the Sharks on Sunday, the 10th time this season Vancouver has blown a game it led after 40 minutes. Tomas Hertl, pictured, scored the winner as San Jose, fuelled by a five-on-three power play, outshot Vancouver 14-6 in the final period. It was the first of five games between the teams in the final quarter of the season. The Canucks visit the Sharks on Saturday.

INJURIES

Top-line RW Jannik Hansen, pictured, is out one or two weeks with a rib injury suffered while taking a shot during the morning skate on Tuesday. RW Radim Vrbata (lower body) practised Wednesday after missing the previous three games. C Brandon Sutter (jaw) and D Alex Edler (leg) are out … For the Sharks, D Matt Tennyson (upper body) and C Tommy Wingels (shoulder) are day-to-day.

LINE DANCE

Minor-league call-up Brendan Gaunce was at Vancouver’s practice Wednesday, but his equipment wasn’t, so the forward didn’t go on the ice. But Gaunce should play Thursday, either on the wing or at centre. For the last month, he has been centring Chris Higgins and Alex Grenier for the Utica Comets. Although head coach Willie Desjardins mused about promoting rookie Jake Virtanen to the top line, Emerson Etem, pictured, continued to skate with Danny and Hank Sedin.

QUOTEBOOK

“I don’t believe you’re just who you are in good times. Your real character comes in tough times. I think you have a chance to show your best right now. Is it hard? Yeah, it’s hard and it’s tough. But I think that’s your opportunity to show the character you have and type of player you are so we know, no matter what happens down the road, this is what we’ll get.” — Willie Desjardins, on his team’s motivation in bleak times.
