DELTA -- With the Western Hockey League's regular season a week away, the Vancouver Giants are not firing on many cylinders.

The Giants dropped their fourth pre-season game in five outings Friday when they squandered a 3-1 second-period lead and fell 5-4 in a shootout to the Victoria Royals at Ladner Arena.

The Giants outshot the Royals 45-15 during regulation and overtime but didn't receive stellar netminding from new No. 1 man Liam Liston.

The shootout then went 11 rounds before Royals' defenceman Brett Cote finally ended it with a backhand deke.

Jackson Houck, Marek Tvrdon, Brett Kulak and Cain Franson, who tied it 4-4 in the third period, scored for Vancouver.

The Giants conclude their pre-season with a Saturday matinee in Victoria. They open the regular season on Sept. 21 at Pacific Coliseum as Victoria will again form the opposition.

Yes, it's about time.
No, they still need better players.
