A day after a salary arbitration hearing, the Canadiens and P.K. Subban have agreed to a contract extension that lasts until 2022.

Salary terms were not immediately announced. TSN's Bob McKenzie reported that the deal is for $72-million, or $9 million a year on average, easily making Subban the highest-paid player on the team. Carey Price, the next-highest-paid player, makes $6.5 million a year, according to CapGeek.com.

“We are very pleased to have reached a long term agreement with P.K. Subban,” Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said in a statement on the Canadiens’ website. “This agreement helps consolidate the future of our team. A key element of our group of young veterans, P.K. plays with a high level of intensity every time he steps onto the ice. Despite his young age, he carries a great deal of experience and brings contagious energy to the team. Defencemen of his level are a rare commodity in the NHL.”

Subban will take part in a conference call with journalists at 5 p.m.

More details to come.
