Bios of the top players for the National Hockey League entry draft, which will be held Friday and Saturday in Montreal.
TOP 30 NORTH AMERICAN SKATERS
(As rated by NHL Central Scouting)
John Tavares
Team: London Knights, OHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: First, skaters
Born: Sept. 20, 1990, Mississauga, Ont.
Height: Six-feet
Weight: 195 pounds
2008-09 stats: 56 GP, 58 G, 46 A, 104 Pts
CS's take: "He is probably better than any other player in the draft from the top of the circle down at being a threat to score. He's an offensive player who is reliable in his defensive zone and getting better at that, but yet not asked to do that very frequently. He is pure offence and for his first years in the NHL will probably be asked to do just that."
Matt Duchene
Team: Brampton Battalion, OHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: Second, skaters
Born: Jan. 16, 1991, Haliburton, Ont.
Height: Five-foot-11
Weight: 200 pounds
2008-09 stats: 59 GP, 21 G, 48 A, 79 Pts
CS's take: "Duchene has the ability to dominate a game. He is an excellent all-around skater with great speed, his playmaking, ability to see the ice and move the puck through traffic to create offence are outstanding. He has a very good shot, but I see his best asset as his speed and ability to beat defencemen to the middle or outside."
Evander Kane
Team: Vancouver Giants, WHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: Third, skaters
Born: Aug. 2, 1991, Vancouver
Height: Six-foot-one
Weight: 176 pounds
2008-09 stats: 61 GP, 48 G, 48 A, 96 Pts
CS's take: "He has power forward qualities from the blue-line in. He's the type of player who doesn't like being denied access to the net. You can almost see when he's got the puck he's going to the net and defying people to stop him. He'll be a 200-pound forward in the National Hockey League. He plays like he's 6-2, 6-3, bigger than his size. He's surprised a lot of people with his strength going to the net."
Brayden Schenn
Team: Brandon Wheat Kings, WHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: Fourth, skaters
Born: Aug. 22, 1991, Saskatoon
Height: Six-feet
Weight: 198 pounds
2008-09 stats: 70 GP, 32 G, 56 A, 88 Pts
CS's take: "Brayden is of the power-forward ilk. He has learned a little about the NHL from his older brother Luke Schenn and he knows how to go to the net. He is a threat to score at all times on the ice and dishes the puck very effectively to his linemates in getting the amount of assists that he does. He takes the puck to the net with the kind of authority that a Jonathan Cheechoo does, yet has puck dishing capacities that maybe a Joe Thornton does. Both are tough players, both are tough to move out in front of the net and Brayden fits that ilk perfectly."
Jordan Schroeder
Team: University of Minnesota Gophers, WCHA
Position: Centre
CS ranking: Fifth, skaters
Born: Sept. 29, 1990, Burnsville, Minn.
Height: Five-foot-eight
Weight: 175 pounds
2008-09 stats: 35 GP, 13 G, 32 A, 45 Pts
CS's take: "He's a dynamic player, a leader and a type of player that has developed into a complete offensive and defensive threat every time he is on the ice. He has a rocket of a wrist shot and he can beat you by putting the puck in the net, going around a defender, or freezing the goaltender and passing it off to one of his wingers. The concern is going to be his overall size, like there was with Scott Gomez, with Brian Gionta and with Patrick Kane, but at the same age he is probably a little thicker and a little bit more compact than they were. He's a great hockey player."
John Moore
Team: Chicago Steel, USHL
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: Sixth, skaters
Born: Nov. 19, 1990, Chicago
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 189 pounds
2008-09 stats: 57 GP, 14 G, 25 A, 39 Pts
CS's take: "I watched John Moore as an underage player and I knew he was a must-see player for this year; he hasn't disappointed me one bit. His first two strides are like Paul Coffey and he has been labelled as a world-class skater. He is poised with the puck, he gets his shots through to the net and he has got a lot stronger this season. He resembles (Calgary Flames) defenceman Jordan Leopold and similar to Leopold at the same age he needs to get a little bit better at playing more aggressive and more physical, but John is going to be a one-two defenceman in the NHL."
Scott Glennie
Team: Brandon Wheat Kings, WHL
Position: Right-wing
CS ranking: Seventh, skaters
Born: Feb. 22, 1991, Oakville, Ont.
Height: Six-foot-one
Weight: 177 pounds
2008-09 stats: 55 GP, 28 G, 42 A, 70 Pts
CS's take: "Scott Glennie was mislabelled earlier in the year as perhaps being only a finisher for often linemate Brayden Schenn. Yet Scott took matters into his own hands with an equal number of goals and assists and contributed greatly this season with a power forward type attitude. Glennie might remind the fan of NHL players with power forward abilities coming off the wall like Jonathan Cheechoo and Jonathan Toews — that kind of offensive ability."
Simon Despres
Team: Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: Eighth, skaters
Born: July 21, 1991, Laval, Que.
Height: Six-foot-four
Weight: 205 pounds
2008-09 stats: 66 GP, 2 G, 30 A, 32 Pts
CS's take: "I think for a potential pro player, he's got the size and mobility. I've seen him many games, and he never seems to make a bad play. He's never going to get 100 points, but definitely, when you want a guy to play defence, he's your guy. He does it all, he'll block shots and he moves the puck at the right time."
Jared Cowan
Team: Spokane Chiefs, WHL
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: Ninth, skaters
Born: Jan. 25, 1991, Saskatoon
Height: Six-foot-five
Weight: 220 pounds
2008-09 stats: 48 GP, 7 G, 14 A, 21 Pts
CS's take: "Jared Cowen made his name last year as a Memorial Cup winning member of the Spokane Chiefs and the comparisons that were thrown around at that time were that of Zdeno Chara. Physically he looks big, strong and rangy. Offensively he has that kind of contribution and if he, despite the pressure that we are putting on him, blossoms into half the player that Chara he is going to be a solid NHL player for years to come."
Zack Kassian
Team: Peterborough Petes, OHL
Position: Right-wing
CS ranking: 10th, skaters
Born: Jan. 24, 1991, Windsor, Ont.
Height: Six-foot-three
Weight: 210 pounds
2008-09 stats: 61 G, 36 G, 33 A, 69 Pts
CS's take: "Kassian is one of the toughest guys in the OHL and probably the entire draft. Last season as an under-ager there were overage guys in the league who would not take him on. He has not fought much this season (because) he has not had to. He is at his best when he is playing physical and tough along the boards. He protects the puck very well and fights through checks. He has very good playmaking and puck-handling abilities."
Dmitry Kulikov
Team: Drummondville Voltigeurs, QMJHL
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: 11th, skaters
Born: Oct. 29, 1990, Lipetsk, Russia
Height: Six-foot-one
Weight: 183 pounds
2008-09 stats: 57 GP, 12 G, 50 A, 62 Pts
CS's take: "In his first year (in the QMJHL) he's been an all-around good player. He's a great skater; he can carry the puck and shoot the puck well. He's strong too, he can take big hits and they don't seem to bother him. What we saw this year is likely what we are going to see from Kulikov in the future; he's going to play the same way in the NHL. He knows when to join the rush, he plays defence first, but recognizes the holes. He can shoot the puck well on the power play and I wouldn't be surprised if he played in the NHL next year."
Carter Ashton
Team: Lethbridge Broncos, WHL
Position: Right-wing
CS ranking: 12th, skaters
Born: April 1, 1991, Winnipeg
Height: Six-foot-three
Weight: 205 pounds
2008-09 stats: 70 GP, 30 G, 20 A, 50 Pts
CS's take: "Carter is a solid prototypical power forward; he knows the game and really is astute at the power-play and penalty kill, offensive and defensive parts of his game. He has been complimented for being hockey smart, perhaps the savvy coming from his dad who played 998 games in the NHL."
Louis Leblanc
Team: Omaha Lancers, USHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 13th, skaters
Born: Jan. 26, 1991, Point Claire, Que.
Height: Six-feet
Weight: 178 pounds
2008-09 stats: 60 GP, 28 G, 31 A, 59 Pts
CS's take: "The most impressive things about Louis LeBlanc are his hands and his evasiveness with the puck; that separates him from other players on the ice right away. He needs to fill out a little bit yet, but he has the frame to be a big centre. The other part of LeBlanc's game that I noticed was his vision; his ability to see and dissect a play and to make the right play. He's also very competitive and he gets involved in the play."
Chris Kreider
Team: Andover HS (Mass.)
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 14th, skaters
Born: Boston
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 201 pounds
2008-09 stats: 26 GP, 33 G, 23 A, 56 Pts
CS's take: "Chris is an excellent skater with explosive speed and acceleration. His short-distance speed is exceptional. He sees the play ahead of time and knows what he's going to do with the puck as soon as he gets it. He is an excellent passer and playmaker. His foot speed, combined with his anticipation and quick stick, gives him the ability to create turnovers and gain puck possession. He is a constant threat to develop breakaways on the penalty-killing unit. He has both an excellent wrist and slap shot, which he disguises well and releases quickly. He can score goals in a number of ways."
Nazem Kadri
Team: London Knights, OHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 15th, skaters
Born: Oct. 6, 1990, London, Ont.
Height: Six-feet
Weight: 167 pounds
2008-09 stats: 56 GP, 25 G, 53 A, 78 Pts
CS's take: "He's big, lanky and skilled. He uses his size to accentuate his puck skills. Size, reach, stick handling ability, those long kinds of stick movements that Mario (Lemieux) used to make, like (Vincent) Lecavalier makes."
Ryan Ellis
Team: Windsor Spitfires, OHL
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: 16th, skaters
Born: Jan. 3, 1991, Hamilton, Ont.
Height: Five-foot-nine
Weight: 173 pounds
2008-09 stats: 57 GP, 22 G, 67 A, 89 Pts
CS's take: "He's a really smart, heady defenceman. His puck movement is excellent and the way he moves the puck around the zone is excellent. He's a real high-end offensive guy. He's got a great shot and he gets it through to the net. A lot of guys have their shots blocked, but he's got a real knack for getting it through, and that leads to a lot of tip-in and rebound goals. He's a smaller guy, but he's not afraid of taking the body. He shows no fear of getting involved in scrums, he's not intimidated."
Stefan Elliott
Team: Saskatoon Blades, WHL
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: 17th, skaters
Born: Jan. 30, 1991, Vancouver
Height: Six-foot-one
Weight: 180 pounds
2008-09 stats: 71 GP, 16 G, 39 A, 55 Pts
CS's take: "Stefan is your all-around, good NHL prospect defenceman. For the Saskatoon Blades, he is an equal mix of solid defence and good offence. Sometimes he is leading the rush, he has that capability, but more often he's supporting the rush or starting it with his good first pass out of the zone."
Landon Ferraro
Team: Red Deer Rebels, WHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 18th, skaters
Born: Aug. 8, 1991, Trail, B.C.
Height: Five-foot-11
Weight: 165 pounds
2008-09 stats: 68 GP, 37 G, 18 A, 55 Pts
CS's take: "He's very good defensively. He has very good defensive positioning; he's always on the right side of the puck. If there's a turnover he's in good position right away. And he comes back deep in his own zone to help. He's very strong defensively, as well as being an offensive threat."
Peter Holland
Team: Guelph Storm, OHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 19th, skaters
Born: Jan. 14, 1991, Toronto
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 185 pounds
2008-09 stats: 68 GP, 28 G, 39 A, 67 Pts
CS's take: "When he is competing, he is very noticeable and effective. He is used both on the power-play and penalty-kill units, and at times he has been used at the point on the power-play. He skates very well, smooth, and he generates good speed. He has a very good shot."
Kyle Palmieri
Team: USA under-18
Position: Right-wing
CS ranking: 20th, skaters
Born: Feb. 1, 1991, Smithtown, N.Y.
Height: Five-foot-10
Weight: 191 pounds
2008-09 stats: 33 GP, 15 G, 15 A, 30 Pts
CS's take: "I think Kyle's got a little bit of Chris Drury in him. I look at his passion, his natural skills and his tenaciousness, and that's what I saw in Chris. He's a lot of fun to watch because he has that vision along with a wicked shot. He very seldom passes up the opportunity to make the right play — he's in position to shoot the puck and has that insight into whether to freeze and dish or just let it go."
Jordan Caron
Team: Rimouski Oceanic, QMJHL
Position: Right-wing
CS ranking: 21st, skaters
Born: Nov. 2, 1990, Sayabec, Que.
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 202 pounds
2008-09 stats: 56 GP, 36 G, 31 A, 67 Pts
CS's take: "Jordan is a very steady, dependable player. He works hard. He's not a flashy player, but he plays his position well and also gets his fair share of points."
Zach Budish
Team: Edina HS (Minn.)
Position: Right-wing
CS ranking: 22nd, skaters
Born: May 9, 1991, Edina, Minn.
Height: Six-foot-three
Weight: 229 pounds
2008-09 stats: 15 GP, 14 G, 13 A, 27 Pts
CS's take: "Zach is physically mature in stature, has a good shot in traffic and has a strong ability to dissect the game around him. He's a force, he's hard to move off the puck and he can snap a wrist shot from the blue line. With Zach playing football and the two seasons overlapping, his criticism has been that he hasn't had his skating legs under him, but I've seen Zach since he was 15 years old. I've seen how he has carried the team and made people around him better. He reminds me of Keith Tkachuk or David Backes at the same age."
Ryan Button
Team: Prince Albert Raiders, WHL
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: 23rd, skaters
Born: March 26, 1991, Edmonton
Height: Six-feet
Weight: 185 pounds
2008-09 stats: 70 GP, 5 G, 32 A, 37 Pts
CS's take: "Button skates and plays the game with so much composure for a young player. His passes and movement around the rink are excellent. He uses his defensive partner well and he's a team player that can buy time and space with his smarts for the game."
Nick Leddy
Team: Eden Prairie HS (Minn.)
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: 24th, skaters
Born: March 20, 1991, Eden Prairie Minn.
Height: Five-foot-11
Weight: 179 pounds
2008-09 stats: 25 GP, 8 G, 29 A, 37 Pts
CS's take: "He's such an explosive skater. It's pretty obvious he's a target of every opposing team because he's the engine that drives the train. Really, though, he's a world-class skater. I'd say he's in the same class as John Moore (Central Scouting's No. 8 ranked skater) and Josh Birkholz (No. 33) of this year's class."
Calvin De Haan
Team: Oshawa Generals, OHL
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: 25th, skaters
Born: May 9, 1991, Ottawa
Height: Six-feet
Weight: 170 pounds
2008-09 stats: 68 GP, 8 G, 55 A, 63 Pts
CS's take: "Calvin shows a lot of patience and poise for a young defenceman. He has high-end puck skill and passing ability. He has a very good shot, hard and accurate, and a very good ability to get the puck through traffic to the net. He sees the ice very well and moves the puck through traffic. His skating is excellent, mobility, agility and speed. His biggest asset is his hockey sense. He makes very few mistakes."
Philippe Paradis
Team: Shawinigan Cataractes, QMJHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 26th, skaters
Born: Jan. 2, 1991, Dolbeau, Que.
Height: Six-foot-one
Weight: 196 pounds
2008-09 stats: 66 GP, 19 G, 31 A, 50 Pts
CS's take: "I think Philippe has more skills than his offensive record shows and a good upside. He's a good skater, with good size at six-foot-two and he can shoot the puck. He goes to the net well and has good ability to score."
Dylan Olsen
Team: Camrose Kodiaks, AJHL
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: 27th, skaters
Born: Jan. 3, 1991, Salt Lake City, Utah
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 206 pounds
2008-09 stats: 53 GP, 10 G, 19 A, 29 Pts
CS's take: n/a
Drew Shore
Team: USA under-18
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 28th, skaters
Born: Jan. 29, 1991, Denver
Height: Six-foot-three
Weight: 190 pounds
2008-09 stats: 53 GP, 14 G, 23 A, 37 Pts
CS's take: "Drew is a hard-working player who plays with a lot of drive and energy. He is big and strong and plays a tough and physical game in the corners and along the wall. He finishes his checks with determination. He has good hands, handles the puck well and makes a firm and accurate pass. He creates offence from his hard work and his never giving up on the puck. He battles hard and is tough to play against. He has very good anticipation of the play and puck flow."
Cody Eakin
Team: Swift Current Broncos, WHL
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 29th, skaters
Born: May 24, 1991, Winnipeg
Height: Five-foot-11
Weight: 176 pounds
2008-09 stats: 54 GP, 24 G, 24 A, 48 Pts
CS's take: "Cody is a tremendous skater and a lot of the things he does come from his skating ability. He's also ultracompetitive, and where he has a lot of success is getting in on the forecheck and chasing and racing for loose pucks. He also uses his speed a lot with the puck on the entries into the offensive zone. His speed also helps him in the defensive zone by catching guys from behind and creating turnovers in situations where guys who don't skate as well wouldn't be able to do. He beats a lot of guys to the outside and that's because of his skating ability."
Chris Brown
Team: USA under-18
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 30th, skaters
Born: Feb. 3, 1991, Houston
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 191 pounds
2008-09 stats: 53 GP, 15 G, 13 A, 28 Pts
CS's take: "Chris plays a tough and physical style game. He sets the tone of the game by taking the body hard and making a statement right from the opening faceoff. He'll drive his way through checks to get to the puck. He's a very good skater with a long, smooth stride with balance and agility. He has very good anticipation of the play, and plays a solid two-way game."
TOP 10 EUROPEAN SKATERS
Victor Hedman
Team: Modo (Swedish Elite League)
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: First, skaters
Born: Dec. 18, 1990, Ornskoldsvik, Sweden
Height: Six-foot-six
Weight: 220 pounds
2008-09 stats: 43 GP, 7 G, 14 A, 21 Pts
CS's take: "Victor Hedman brings to his game unsurpassed combinations of size, explosiveness in his skating, quickness and offensive ability. He is indeed the whole package and that just might get him the No. 1 selection overall."
Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson
Team: Timra (Swedish Elite League)
Position: Left-wing
CS ranking: Second, skaters
Born: April 12, 1991, Norrkoping, Sweden
Height: Six-foot-one
Weight: 201 pounds
2008-09 stats: 50 GP, 7 G, 10 A, 17 Pts
CS's take: "Magnus perhaps is the stereotype of the skilled Swede coming over here in recent years — outside speed extraordinaire, ability to freeze defenders and make all his good moves work even more effectively. He was a good contributor to his team at the world junior tournament and I think will be an essential member of any NHL team in years to come."
Jacob Josefson
Team: Djurgarden (Swedish Elite League)
Position: Centre
CS ranking: Third, skaters
Born: March 2, 1991, Stockholm, Sweden
Height: Six-feet
Weight: 187 pounds
2008-09 stats: 50 GP, 5 G, 11 A, 16 Pts
CS's take: "He is a very good two-way player. He has a very good responsibility for his defensive duties. He's more a playmaker, a guy who sees the ice really well, creates a lot of scoring chances with his passing skills. He's very good with the stick and very good in traffic because he is an excellent stickhandler."
Oliver Ekman Larsson
Team: Leksand (Allsvenskan League)
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: Fourth, skaters
Born: July 17, 1991, Karlskrona, Sweden
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 176 pounds
2008-09 stats: 39 GP, 3 G, 14 A, 17 Pts
CS's take: "Oliver likes to play offensively, often carrying the puck into the neutral zone. He has the frame, speed and skill to dominate. He is a smooth skater and can handle the puck at top speed, but needs to use his size to his advantage more. He often quarterbacks the power-play and has a hard shot from the blue-line."
Tim Erixon
Team: Skelleftea (Swedish junior league)
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: Fifth, skaters
Born: Feb. 24, 1991, Portchester, N.Y.
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 190 pounds
2008-09 stats: 9 GP, 2 G, 12 A, 14 Pts
CS's take: "Tim Erixon brings to his Swedish Elite League club team, the same kind of elite hockey skills that perhaps his dad, Jan Erixon, did for over 500 games in the NHL. A smart defenceman who can either lead a rush or support the rush from behind, he was on display at the World Junior Championship in helping bring his team to the final game."
David Rundblad
Team: Skelleftea (Swedish junior league)
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: Sixth, skaters
Born: Oct. 8, 1990, Lycksele, Sweden
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 189 pounds
2008-09 stats: 10 GP, 8 G, 7 A, 15 Pts
CS's take: "He has a very good shot. He is a right-handed shot and he is used on the power play, even in the (Elite) League despite being a young player. He is a very smart player. He could be a little more physical in his game, but that is something that he is learning."
Carl Klingberg
Team: Frolunda (Swedish junior league)
Position: Left-wing
CS ranking: Seventh, skaters
Born: Jan. 28, 1991, Gothenburg, Sweden
Height: Six-foot-three
Weight: 205 pounds
2008-09 stats: 35 GP, 13 G, 13 A, 26 Pts
CS's take: "He has explosive acceleration and is strong on his skates — he is hard to hold off when he's driving the net. He works hard down low in the zone and is courageous enough to go into tight battles."
Marcus Johansson
Team: Farjestad (Swedish Elite League)
Position: Centre
CS ranking: Eighth, skaters
Born: Oct. 6, 1990, Landskrona, Sweden
Height: Five-foot-11
Weight: 189 pounds
2008-09 stats: 45 GP, 5 G, 5 A, 10 Pts
CS's take: "Johansson has a good selection of shots with a quick precise wrist shot. His overall skill level and stickhandling give him room to move the puck and shoot. He is a player with good offensive instincts and fine understanding of his defensive duties. He can play both centre and wing with a consistent hard working presence."
Dmitri Orlov
Team: Novokuznetsk (Russian league)
Position: Defenceman
CS ranking: Ninth, skaters
Born: July 23, 1991, Novokuznetsk, Russia
Height: Six-feet
Weight: 197 pounds
2008-09 stats: 16 GP, 1 G, 0 A, 1 Pt
CS's take: "Orlov is an extremely skilled offensive-minded defenceman with excellent hand eye co-ordination. He makes good, hard, tape-to-tape passes and his excellent stickhandling, supported by very efficient small dekes, gains him extra time and space. He isn't overly physical, but he is noticeably strong."
Joonas Nattinen
Team: Blues Jr. (Finnish junior league)
Position: Centre
CS ranking: 10th, skaters
Born: Jan. 3, 1991, Jamsa, Finland
Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 183 pounds
2008-09 stats: 30 GP, 9 G, 29 A, 38 Pts
CS's take: "Joonas plays very well at both ends of the ice and moves the puck well from both sides. He's a good passer on his backhand and is utilized on the penalty kill. He is physically strong on the boards and is hard to knock down in this level."
TOP 3 NORTH AMERICAN GOALTENDERS

Height: Six-foot-two
Weight: 218 pounds
2008-09 stats: 31-21-6, 3.02 GAA, .911 save percentage
CS's take: "He's got the look of an NHL goalie down the road. I like his foot speed, he's got an excellent butterfly, and when he goes down he covers the net well. He moves well with excellent net coverage."
TOP EUROPEAN GOALTENDER
Robin Lehner
Team: Frolunda (Swedish junior league)
CS rank: First, European goalies

CS's take: "Robin looks pretty similar to (New York Rangers') Henrik Lundqvist. He makes himself look very big in the net and there is not much room to shoot at. He challenges shooters pretty well and his lower net butterfly coverage is good."
