Sean Monahan is staying.
The 19-year-old Calgary Flames centreman, the sixth overall pick at last summer’s NHL draft in New Jersey, will remain with the club for the remainder of the season rather than return to the OHL Ottawa 67’s after an astonishing audition that saw him net six goals.
The Flames had the customary nine games to make a call on their young star, and in the end he made the decision easy for them.
Playing on a line alongside Sven Baertschi and Jiri Hudler, he has also recorded three assists for nine points, tying him for third on the team alongside currently-injured captain Mark Giordano.
Before being selected by the Flames, Monahan spent three seasons in Ottawa, serving as the club’s captain in the 2012-13 season. In 185 games with the 67’s, he scored 84 goals and 203 points. In his final year in Ottawa, he averaged 1.34 points-per-game.
