Game Story: Calgary Stampeders 34, B.C. Lions 29
Herald game balls go to Glenn, Fraser and McCartney
Stampeders 34 at Lions 29
OFFENCE — Calgary QB Kevin Glenn: Heading to his first Grey Cup, he directed an attack that absolutely gutted the league’s top-ranked defence, finishing 15 of 24 for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Shook off the Korey Banks interception for a TD that briefly tied the score to produce a truly masterful display.
DEFENCE — Stamps’ safety Eric Fraser: In a smothering overall game from the defence, Fraser epitomized the whole. Never got singed by an impressive array of pass catchers, broke up an important late pass aimed at Geroy Simon, and pressured Leos’ QB Travis Lulay when asked to. Solid, efficient. Just like his mates.
SPECIAL TEAMS — Stamps’ Karl McCartney led a rabid band of Calgary kick returners, limiting Tim Brown and Co. to very little and making the Lions too often play on a long field.
Ironically, in a game teeming with explosive moments, a play that travelled a shade more than one yard. A desperation reach by backup QB Bo Levi Mitchell on third-and-one to finally (at least officially) break the plane of the goal-line as the Lions’ D swarmed to the ball, propelling the Stamps ahead by more than two converted touchdowns, 31-16.
The most vital of Maurice Price’s many, a perfectly-designed third-and-one fake that Bo Levi Mitchell lofted up for him to run under. The 42-yard play, kept out of the end zone only by a late lunge from Byron Parker, resulted in Mitchell’s third-down lunge that provided the Stamps some breathing room.
Showing absolutely no respect for age or achievement, Stamps’ DB Brandon Smith lays the smack on the CFL’s all-time receiving leader, Geroy Simon, along the B.C. sideline after No. 81 latches onto a short dump-off pass from QB Travis Lulay.
