Top prospect Yakupov out indefinitely

NHL scouts won’t be seeing much of potential first-overall pick Nail Yakupov for the next while.

The Sarnia Sting forward is expected to miss an extended period of time after suffering a knee injury while playing for Russia in Thursday’s gold medal game at the world juniors.

The Sting are already missing their other top prospect Alex Galchenyuk — also with a knee injury.

Yakupov will have the knee further evaluated when he returns to Sarnia.

The 18-year-old native of Nizhnekamsk, Russia, is in his second season with the Sting. He had 21 goals and 32 assists in his first 26 games. Last season, Yakupov collected 49 goals and 101 points as a rookie.

He had nine assists for the Russian team in seven tournament games.

Yakupov is eligible for this summer’s NHL draft and a number of scouting services project going first overall.
