A group of Abbotsford women who have publicly and unabashedly declared themselves 30-year-old virgins will appear on two American TV shows this week.

Lisa Marziali, 30, and three of her friends started up a blog in July titled Confessions of a 29-Year-Old Virgin: Talking Purity as a forum to discuss the value of sexual abstinence before marriage.

"We really wanted to provide an example for people in the same age category, and those younger than us, and demonstrate waiting for sex until marriage is a lifestyle worth pursuing," said Marziali.

The website also works to break down the stereotypes associated with being 30 years old and a virgin, she said.

"A virgin is typically thought of as somebody who is socially awkward with lower self esteem or super over-the-top religious," said Marziali.

"We want to show the stereotype has changed, and you can be confident, successful, beautiful and still see sex within marriage as something to be valued and treasured."

The women's blog soon drew the attention of a producer working on a show for the TLC network titled Virgin Diaries.

One thing led to another and the show's TV crew arrived in Abbotsford for filming in September.

The show featuring Marziali and Danielle Michaud, 30, and 29-year-old Tamara Larson, airs on TLC on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 9 p.m.

Before that, the trio will make an appearance on the Dr. Drew show on the HLN network at 9 p.m. on Friday.

Blogmate Amy Schmidt, 30, hasn't been caught up in the media spotlight as she's currently serving in Uganda as a missionary. The four women involved in the project met up at Abbotsford's River Community Church.

On their website they talk about all the facets of being single and committed to abstinence at their age.

"We talk about the struggle of seeing all our friends getting married and having babies, and having everything you want for yourself," said Marziali.

"Saving yourself for marriage is not a walk in the park."

Despite the difficulties of resisting the influences of a rather sex-crazed culture, the women hope to gain something in return.

"We hope to experience the fullness of sex within marriage . . . it's not just a physical act but an emotional and spiritual connection too."

The reaction of people to their website has largely been positive, she said.

"People were surprised we were putting ourselves out there in such a vulnerable way . . . In four months we've had 17,000 views."

Filming of the Virgin Diaries involved four 10-hour days, which included a blind date for Marziali.

She won't spoil the surprise and say how her date reacted to her views on sex.

"If you want to find out, you'll have to tune into the show."

No way, just a bump in the road.
Yes, it is over for them.
Don't know.
