Video: Foreign worker alleges he was underpaid

Omar Ramirez, a 24-year-old temporary foreign worker from Mexico, has filed a complaint with the B.C. Employment Standards Branch over working conditions at a Langley blueberry farm. The complaint alleges he worked long shifts without overtime pay, worked six or seven days a week, often had hot dogs for meals, had his movements monitored by video cameras and was almost always paid in cash without pay stubs. Cinnamon Dagsvik, who rented a house on the same farm property, says she befriended Ramirez and helped him to leave and complain to authorities. Ramirez is now seeking almost $20,000 in back pay — money he’d like to put towards getting an education in BC. Rameriz’s allegations have not been proven in court.
