We have moved to Facebook commenting on our website in a bid to foster a robust, relevant and respectful debate on the issues of the day. Below are answers to some questions you might have.
Q: Why have you moved to a Facebook commenting system?
A: Our goal is to create a welcoming and thoughtful forum where real people can debate real issues. We believe Facebook commenting will promote more stimulating conversation and make it easier for you to share stories with your community.
Q: Do I need a Facebook account to comment?
A: Yes. To add a comment, you need to be logged in to Facebook. If you do not have a Facebook account, you can get one at http://www.facebook.com. It is simple and free.
Q: I already have an account with canada.com and/or your website. Do I still need a Facebook account to comment?
Q: Do I need to register for an account on your website to comment?
A: No. You only need a Facebook account to comment.
Q: Will my friends on Facebook see my comments?
A: Only if you so choose. When you post a comment, you have the option to check off “Post my comments to my Facebook profile." If you uncheck the box, your comment will not appear on your Facebook page.
Q: I left comments on your site, signed out, and my comments have disappeared. Why?
A: Facebook requires commenters to have 4 friends and a profile photo in order for a comment to be viewable outside your own network of friends. If a user doesn't meet these requirements, their comment must be approved by a moderator before it appears on the site. Please make sure you have 4 friends and a photo attached to your profile to ensure your comment is made public right away.
Also, if you have included any banned words, your comment may be filtered out for moderation. Please make sure you're not using inappropriate or abusive language.
Q: Why does my Facebook profile picture and name appear on the comments page when I haven’t posted a comment?
A: If you’re signed in to Facebook, your information will appear, but it is not visible to anyone else until your comment is published.
Q: Will people be able to view my Facebook profile if I post a comment?
A: What others see when they click on your name or picture on our site is determined by your Facebook privacy settings. To adjust your Facebook privacy settings, visit http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy.
Q: How do I report an inappropriate or abusive comment?
A: Click the “X” in the upper right corner of the comment box. Choose one of the options to report a comment as spam or abuse. The comment will be removed from your view. Facebook tracks abuse reports and automatically bans users who are consistently abusive. Website staff also monitor comments and will ban abusive users if necessary.
Q: How do you decide if a comment is abusive or inappropriate?
A: We will block comments that contain obscenities or name-calling, personal attacks, hate speech or threats, spam or links to questionable sources, defamatory remarks, and comments discussing legal cases that are still before the courts.
Q: What is a Top Commenter and how do I become one?
A: Facebook automatically assigns the Top Commenter badge to users whose comments are most often “liked” by others.
Q: Why can’t I see the comments?
A: Comments on this site are public, which means they are visible whether or not you're logged in to Facebook. If you cannot see the comments and you're using a work computer, please check with your IT department. Some government agencies and other employers block Facebook domains and applications from their servers.
Q: How do I delete my own comment?
A: Make sure you're signed into Facebook. Visist the article you commented on. Hover over your comment and click the small pencil button that appears. Choose delete.
