OTTAWA — Firefighters are battling a major blaze at St. Albert Cheese Factory, southeast of Ottawa near Casselman, Ont.
The size of the fire brought trucks from five neighbouring fire departments including, Embrun, Limoges, Rockland, Casselman and St. Isidore. All of the firefighters at the scene are volunteers, said volunteer fire chief Aurele Constatineau.
Nearby residents have been warned to stay indoors due to the thick smoke in the area.
The OPP have closed the on- and off-ramps from Highway 417 to Principale Street.
St. Albert Cheese Factory, located at 150 St. Paul Road, was established in 1894 and has been producing renowned varieties of local cheddar ever since. The on-site retail store is open seven days a week, but an OPP spokesman said everyone was safely evacuated.
More to come.
