An afternoon of landscaping for a Southern California  couple has turned into a potential murder mystery for the local police and coroner.

The couple was using a small tractor to dig into a berm along one edge of their property Sunday when they came across what appeared to be a human skull and bones, reports the Orange County Register.

The couple had bought the property from their next-door neighbour, a hoarder whose house burned down in 2006. They rebuilt on the land and moved in a year ago.

"Obviously we're looking into the fire in 2006 -- was it arson-related or an accident?" Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told KTLA News.

"We're looking into the previous owner, who we now have at the police department. We're also looking at any missing people during that time period."

The coroner is expected to excavate the yard today and confirm whether the remains are indeed human. On Sunday, police declared the yard a crime scene and cordoned it off with police tape. A blue tarp covered part of the yard.

The previous owner had lived at the property for 20 years.
