Georgia man re-enters burning home to retrieve his beer
A drink or two is probably in order after your house burns down.
Walter Serpit of Columbus, Ga., certainly thought so.
The man, who walks with a cane, re-entered his burning home Thursday afternoon in an effort to rescue his beer from the fire.
"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," Serpit told WTVM-TV. "I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this back draft was about to kill me."
Serpit was watching TV with five other adults and two kids when the room began to fill with smoke. Everyone got to safety. Officials haven't determined the cause of the blaze, but residents believe the culprit was a new water heater.
Serpit was able to save "several cans."
