WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets added some veteran presence on Friday by signing free-agent forward Kyle Wellwood to a one-year contract.

The 28-year-old native of Windsor, Ont., has scored 68 goals and 105 assists in 373 career National Hockey League games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks. The deal is reportedly worth $700,000 US.

Wellwood, who was drafted in the fifth round (134th overall) in the 2001 NHL entry draft, scored five goals and eight assists in 35 games last season with the Sharks. He began last season with Mytishchi Atlant of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, scoring five goals and three assists.

Wellwood starred with the Ontario Hockey League's Belleville Bulls, when he led the league in scoring as a 17-year-old with 35 goals and 83 assists.
