A recent conversation with Bourdon
Jim Jamieson, The Province
Published: Friday, March 7, 2008In March, Province reporter Jim Jamieson chatted with Luc Bourdon about his life in and out of hockey. Here's the conversation:
Q: Besides hockey, your other passion is music. You're an accomplished guitar player. Tell us about that hobby.
A: I started to play when I was about 13. My uncle was a music teacher and he got me into it.
Q: What kind of music do you like to play?
A: I just get into a phase, but I play all over -- blues, death metal, all kinds.
Q: Who's your favourite group?
A: I change all the time, but all-time it's AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. I think Angus Young (AC/DC) and Jimmy Page (Zeppelin) are the greatest guitarists ever.
Q: You grew up in the small town of Shippagan, N.B., which is in the northeastern part of the Acadian peninsula. What was that like?
A: It's a big area for fishing. My uncle owns a crab fishing boat and lot of my family works with him. I worked on his boat with him in the summer until I was 19.
I went out with him once last summer. He used to pay me, but I just enjoy being on the water. It's a good time, all the family is out there.
Q: How big is hockey in your community?
A: We don't have as big a program as the biggest cities or in Quebec. I'm probably the only one from back home who made it this far, but I was always the one who would be on the pond doing drills at night at minus-40.
I'd be out there passing to the pile of snow. I always loved hockey. Even when the season is over and it's summer I can't go more than a week without getting my skates and stick.
Q: Shippagan is in a French-speaking region of New Brunswick. You speak English well now. How did that evolve?
A: I started to speak English in summer hockey when I mixed in with other Atlantic region kids in novice (age 7-8). In the summer when I stay home for a month or two, when I get back here I kind of struggle for a short period of time to speak English again.
Q: Partway through this season you decided to take the visor off. Why did you make that decision?
A: I just wanted to try it, to see a bit better. I'm going to try it for a while. My mom's not happy about it, though.
