Prior to Saturday's game, the Toronto Maple Leafs had gone past regulation to settle six games this season. Each time they had lost. But with the players on the bench turning their helmets around backwards, the team's luck in overtime changed.

Led by shootout goals from Phil Kessel and Niklas Hagman, as well as a 31-save performance from Vesa Toskala, who picked up his first victory of the season, the Leafs defeated the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Saturday night.

"It's nice to win. It's been a while," said Toskala, whose last victory was on Feb. 26. "Luck was on our side a little bit today. But I think we deserved it, because we played hard."

It was starting to sound redundant, but the Leafs needed to pick up two points in this game.

The team, which improved to 4-11-6, had lost five straight. And after blowing a 3-0 lead in a deflating 6-5 overtime shootout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, Toronto was ranked last in the overall standings.

With Toskala making a rare home appearance, it did not appear as though a win was possible.

The veteran goaltender, who entered the game with a 0-4-2 record, had not started at Air Canada Centre since Oct. 10. Upon stopping a dump-in attempt for his first save, the sold-out crowd gave him a sarcastic cheer. But after the veteran goaltender was named the first star, the fans were more genuine with their applause.

"Outstanding. Outstanding," Leafs defenceman Ian White said of Toskala. "I can't say enough about him. He's been through a lot of adversity here and people have been on him. To keep focused and battle through it all and finally get this win - it was a long time coming."

For Toskala, it was the type of performance that has been missing this season.

Heading into Saturday's game, he was still searching for his first win. And his goals-against average (4.26) and save percentage (.854) were among the worst in the league.

But with Jonas Gustavsson having allowed five goals on 45 shots against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, it was Toskala's chance to play. And he more than proved he was deserving of the opportunity.

Toskala, who stopped 19-of-20 shots in the opening 20 minutes, was lying on his back when he robbed Alex Ovechkin with a glove save in the first period. He then slid across the crease and got his pad on a one-timer from Brooks Laich in the second. He then stopped Eric Fehr and forced Ovechkin to miss in the shootout.

"By far, that was the best Toskala has played in a long time," said Leafs head coach Ron Wilson. "And it was nice to see him finally get a win for all his hard work."

Still, Toskala could not stop them all.

There was less than three minutes remaining in the first period, when Ovechkin scored to give the Capitals took a 1-0 lead. Leafs head coach Ron Wilson was as much at fault as the players on the ice. That was because Toronto's fourth line, consisting of Jamal Mayers, Wayne Primeau and Colton Orr, matched up against Washington's top line.

Taking advantage of the difference in skill level, Ovechkin converted a three-on-two passing play from Laich and Mike Green for his 16th of the season.

"That was not their fault on the goal," Wilson said of his forwards. "That was late in their shift and they got caught out there."

With Toskala stopping all 10 shots he faced in the second period, the Leafs took advantage of a Capitals' lineup that had played the night before.

Hagman tied the game on a pinball-like goal that bounced off at least two different players before ricocheting in off Hagman's own arm. It seemed like it was the only way that the Leafs, who had averaged 2.6 goals per game, were going to beat Semyon Varlamov.

The Washington goaltender headed into the game with an impressive 2.08 goals-against average and .925 save percentage in his last eight games. His numbers in the overtime shootout were even more impressive. In three games, Varlamov had allowed just three goals on 17 shots.

Toskala headed into the shootout with a 7-13 record, having allowed 30 goals on 63 shots.

With the Toronto players wearing their "rally buckets," Kessel snuck a wrist shot past Varlamov on the shootout. Washington's Fehr then had his stick snap on his attempt. After Leafs forward Mitchell and Ovechkin both did not score, Hagman found the back of the net on a backhand deke.

"Those overtime games can mean the difference between making the post-season," said White, who could not help but think of where the Leafs would be had they picked up wins in all their overtime appearances.

"I don't know what the average is, but I'm sure you play between 10 and 15 overtime games each year. If you get that extra point in half of them, that's a couple of spots in the standings."

Leafs looked pretty good tonight. But can they actually string together two in a row, I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Game boring as hell
Sat, Nov 21, 09 at 11:40 PM
Looked like 2 AHL teams playing after having a beer party in their dressing rooms. The play was disjointed with little action around the nets. Ovechkin looked like the only player on the ice that belonged in the NHL. Capitals have 8 guys on the injury list ,so they had an excuse. Toronto has essentially a full roster and had no excuse. People do not want to see hockey played in a sloppy and laclustre style. This game was "pure drudgery".

I suspected something like that!! The Capitals should have SMOKED THEM, OR, they were paid to throw the game so Toskula could get a win.

Yes, the game was boring, so thank you CBC for your communist ways and giving us the Leafs, one of the worst teams in the world, to us once again. It would be nice to see the best teams in the world, not the Leafs every single HNIC broadcast. I can't believe I pay for this crap.

Made them look like the "goofs" that they have played like. At least try to look professional! People are paying big bucks to watch and they do not like to be insulted by this "beer party atmosphere". Get some dignity or go to a "beer league".

Then maybe they will respect the fans. As my mother used to say "you are what you present to the world". The leafs are cricized because they exemplify " a lack of caring and show disrespect for the fans who expect a dignified effort. You do "not have to win" but you have to present yourself in a reasonably respectful manner. Put the helmets on properly. You can act stupid when you carry the Stanley Cup around and not before.
?
Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 09:10 AM
Well I don't think the Leafs are losing because they aren't trying, I think they just don't have enough skill on the team. The rally hats were stupid though. Seems like a Wilson idea, hopefully Burke straightens that out.

Hi Terry and others. We at HNIC feel obligated to carry Canadian teams... hence the word 'Canada' in the title of the program. You really aren't paying for anything, since we make more than enough from ad revenues to cover a meager budget, which lets us keep special olympians like mike milbury employed. Fact is, there were 3 different games going at once yesterday, and you saw whichever was regional to you. Of course you could pay for a cable package which would let you watch whatever game you want (like the NFL, NBA, NASCAR, MLB, does), or you could sit and cry your redneck retard conspiracy theories into your cold can of beans that you are eating for breakfast.

TO HNIC...

Most people who enjoy hockey in Canada are pretty sophisticated when it comes to the sport. If given a choice between watching the elite of the game play every Saturday night, or watching a homer style broadcast featuring a favorite of one particular region, the elite of the game should win out. The great young players of today are going to be like the Gordie Howe's, Gretzky's, Orr,s of today, or even better. They are the Michael Jordan's, Larry Bird's, or Tiger Woods of our generation. Instead, we get to watch players named Finger and Exxelby every single Saturday night. It is a real shame and a good reason why hockey will not ever be more than a curiosity around the world. It is so regional and partisan that the games best superstars are not going to be featured like the NBA or NFL feature their players. And yes, if you are a tax payer in Canada, you are paying for it.

I agree, most would, which is why those cable packages are a great option (I subscribe to one). Just like the NFL though, it costs money to broadcast a team into a different team's territory. So if you're in Southwest Ontario you're SOL. I live close to Buffalo (in Ontario still) and I sure don't want to watch the Bills every Sunday, but that's what they show on TV. Funny you should mention basketball, since most Canadian channels show many hours a week of pointless NHL stuff and cram NBA news/highlights into what, 5 mins tops? Not that any of this even matters anyways since you can be sure CBC operates to maximize profit, which you should be happy about since you pay for it right?

Let's not get to excited over the win this team needs alot of changes before it get's better. When is Burke going to trade player's like Stajan,Finger,Mayers, and the rest of the plugs on this team.

It's a regional thing with the leafs, get it? It's the way it's been forever and it's not about to change. Please move on.

There should be a box on income tax returns. If you check it, then you agree to pay a certain amount to the CBC. If unchecked, The CBC does not get your contribution. That way, nobody can complain.

The problem with the cbc is they are too Leaf heavy when the team stinks. I am a hockey fan of all the teams, especially the CDN teams, and I for one just want to see a good mix. The other problem is the cbc staffers do not do the network any favours. Don Cherry only has interest in a similar way to the bearded lady in an old time circus...the freak factor. Compare him to other analysts in other sports and you have to say he is a joke. I realize he is popular because he is pro-Leaf, but if you look away from that he does not deserve the platform that he has.

Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 05:40 PM
A cockeyed, ass-backwards win for the Leafs. They were fortunate enough to run into an injured plagued and tired Washington team who battled the night before with the Habs. But, a win is a win. Guess all is well now in Leaf Nation with that win.

I take it you've been messing with the dosage of your daily supply of Prozac? That guy is entitled to his opinion and many ofus agree that it was asinine of a professional team to sport their helmets backwards - very "beer league" indeed. Who the hell are you to object so unreasonably to the opinions of others?!
Still say it is the coaching
Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 05:58 PM
This leaf team has enough talent to play and win every 3rd game if they were coached intelligently. Play a defgensive game from start to finish and disarm the big shooters on the opposing teams. Wait for your chances and bury the puck in the net. Claude Provost, who played for the habs back in the 60's had one job each game and that was to "shadow the top player on the other team. He did it better than anyone that I ever saw. You can see that most teams have 1 big shooter. Shut that guy down and then you have a chance. Leafs just go out there and play with no plan and that's why they lose all the time. With Washington, the leafs finally got smart and put the 3rd forward high and took away Ovechkins room to manoevere. Its no secret that coaching is a big part of winning. In golf, Tiger Woods analyzes every hole on a golf course thoroughly before he sets foot on the course. He even has video analysis of each hole available to watch and get himself prepared. Wilson has to get out of the 50's and get into the 21st century. Winning and preparation go hand in hand in todays sports world.
Send In The Clowns!
Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 06:39 PM
First they played dodge ball at practice to prepare for the season and now they turn helmets wrong way around. A comedy of errors! The Leafs are truly the dregs of the National Hockey League.

A question
Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 08:56 PM
Has anybody ever seen a professional hockey team wear their helmets backwards? I'm serious. Has anybody ever seen it before? I haven't and I'm 60 years old. When you have a record of 4 wins in 21 games, I think you need to be a little more serious. Unless you just do not give a damn about the paying customer who thinks that his team is trying hard and is upset that their record is disgraceful, to say the least.

All you clowns who constantly complain that they're tired of seeing the Leafs every Saturday night should boycott the sponsors who pay for air time during the games. No matter who is on, its the sponsors who pay for the majority of the programming, not the pittance in taxes that goes towards the CBC. And for all you Hab queers, get RDS. It shows all their games and if you think the CBC announcers are pro Toronto, try listening to the Hab play by play team or Dean Brown and Garry Galley for the Sens, but whatever you decide to do, quit your whining.

I enjoyed the game. Leafs played well enough for several more goals (only the Cap's goalie played well on their team). A bit disappointed Ovie didn't play better. Guess they're tired after losing to the Habs the night before (if they want the Cup this season - they can't be tired). I thought Hagman and White were the best Leaf players. We'll just wait to see if they can win against the Islanders... Oh yeah - I thought the helmet thing was funny. It was nice to see them all laughing waiting for the shoot-out to begin. It loosened them up...and looked what happened.

OK you're all right, the leafs have no right to turn their helmets around. It's just not right. Life should always be serious. I couldn't fathom a more professional and productive way of exercising a show of team confidence. Evidently, they've taken to witch-craft and hocus-pocus charms to affect the out-come of their games. How pathetic!
