Raleigh, NC - Erik Cole scored with 2.9 seconds left in regulation, and Tuomo Ruutu tallied in the shootout and added a career-high four assists, as the Carolina Hurricanes came back from a three-goal deficit to shock the Toronto Maple Leafs, 6-5, at RBC Center.

Matt Cullen #8 of the Carolina Hurricanes scores a second period goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the RBC Center on November 19, 2009 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Tim Gleason tallied twice for his first-career multi-goal game for Carolina, which has won two of its last three after dropping the previous 14 contests. Matt Cullen registered a goal and an assist, while Stephane Yelle lit the lamp for his first goal in his last 31 games. Manny Legace allowed five goals on 32 shots.

"I think the fight on our end was good," Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice said. "We obviously weren't pleased with our first (period) and both teams' game plans are identical, build as much speed through the neutral zone and control the puck in the offensive zone. They did a great job in the first. We were really good with ours in the next two."

Alexei Ponikarovsky had a goal and a helper for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped five straight after a modest two-game winning streak. Ian White, Lee Stempniak, Matt Stajan and Mikhail Grabovski also tallied, while Jonas Gustavsson made 40 saves and also picked up his third career assist on Ponikarovsky's goal.

"All this stuff is all irrelevant if you don't compete hard all night, and we didn't," Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson said. "First goal, last goal, you guys are focused on all the wrong things. We had guys who didn't get the job done when it mattered most."

With the game tied at 4-4 late in the third period, White got a measure of redemption for taking a questionable high sticking double-minor midway through the stanza when he scored with 30 seconds remaining. After taking a pass from Nikolai Kulemin, White beat Legace from in close.

However, with the goaltender pulled in the final seconds, Cole's rebound tally tied it.

After a scoreless OT, Ruutu and Jussi Jokinen both scored to give the Hurricanes a major advantage in the shootout. Then as Stempniak attempted to keep Toronto alive, he was stopped on a pad save by Legace that gave Carolina the victory.

Toronto got a gift goal 1:01 into the opening period when Joe Corvo coughed up the puck in front of his own net and Stajan was there to fire it home. Stempniak's slap shot from the top of the right made it 2-0 at 14:21.

Grabovski then scored on a rebound with 1:34 left in the first for a three- goal Leafs advantage after 20 minutes.

Then in the late stages of the second, Carolina tallied twice within 43 seconds to make it a one-goal game. First it was Yelle poking in a rebound after a goal-mouth scramble at 16:47, then Cullen put a wrist shot over the shoulder of Gustavsson from the low right circle at 17:30.

Early in the third period with the Leafs ahead 3-2, Ponikarovsky made it a two-goal game while on the power play. Gleason's point blast at 8:08 got through a maze of players and in to get the 'Canes to within a goal.

White was given a controversial double-minor at 8:51 for allegedly high sticking Tom Kostopoulos in front of the net, giving Carolina a gift four- minute power play. After the Leafs killed off half of it, Gleason moved in from his point position and scored from the low left circle on a feed from Brandon Sutter to tie the game at 4-4 at 11:56.

Game Notes

The Hurricanes placed forward Eric Staal (upper-body injury) on injured reserve and moved goaltender Cam Ward (leg) to long-term IR on Thursday...Carolina was also without defenseman Joni Pitkanen (lower-body injury) and forward Scott Walker (upper-body injury)...Toronto notched a 3-2 regulation win in Raleigh when the clubs met on November 6, but Carolina has won five of the last seven meetings with the Leafs.

I've been watching hockey for a long time, and I have never seen a team with worst luck, or whatever you want to call it. I know this is a pretty bad team, but it seems to be almost some kind of jinx. I have never seen a team that things go so wrong for.

Do you believe in curses? I'm not telling you what to believe, but I tell you that the Leafs are operating on very, very, very bad energy. In layman terms, that team/organization is cursed for all the ill deeds of the past. Accept it; the Leafs have worst luck than "bad luck schleprock"!

The refs have a hate-on for the Leafs. There's a lot of talent here - it's just a matter of time before things take a turn for the better. It is simply a matter of confidence...once the boys have it you will see a huge turnaround.

I do believe in curses, this one is called Brian Burke. Unload that load mouthed piece of crap and things may get a little better. Danny the refs do hate the Leafs or so all our "make excuse Fans" would have us all believe, give me a break , every team in the league gets bad calls and deals with them. The Leafs are no exception! Was there bad calls against them? You bet there was, but they lost because they played lousy. STOP blaming the refs, you make us all sound like a bunch of whiny losers>

well what can u say? you cant win when ya play the reffs and the other team at the same time. one goal called off after it was in the net 2 seconds before the whistle!!!! then a 4 min pen for a high stick that the leafs didn't do!!!! the hurricane player hit his own guy in the face with his own stick , it was replayed several times showing absolutely who's stick it was!!! so dont put the leafs down for their play last night they played a good game. and don't forget Buttmans rule, WHEN IN DOUBT, THE AMERICAN TEAM GETS THE FAVORABLE CALL WHEN EVER THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT!!!!!!

Blame everyone but your own organization. Don't blame Burke because he mortgaged the future to try and win now. Don't blame Wilson because he's an overrated dud of a coach who had the wrong players on the ice at the wrong time. Don't blame your own fans for padding MLSE's wallets whether they field a decent team or not year after year. Blame the refs - right - and if that doesn't work, blame Americans!! Douche...

I am speechless. Since the start of the season, I have kept saying, they will come out of it. 20 games later, it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Not to be too critical, but I don't think they will win 20 games this season. They 3, that's 3 wins in the first quarter of the season. I won't be watching their games for awhile. I can't handle the stress and disappointments. Hey if the Habs make it to the playoffs, at least I'll have someone to cheer for. (Anyone they play against)
Enough is enough-no more excuses

Toronto has now equalled a record established by the Boston Bruins in 1958 for the worst record in the NHL after 20 games. I do not give a rat's behind about the rebuilding excuse. Several other teams have more new faces in the line-up than Toronto and they are still respectable. The first step..Wilson has to go..Blake and Grabovski to the minors. Bozak and Stahlbeg up. This team can play.500 hockey with a good coach who knows not to criticize his players in public. After 10 games there was a cry for his firing and now after 20 games nothing has been done. At game 30 the leafs will still be terrible if no change is made in the coaching. If Wilson cannot"sing" he cannot be "in the choir". End of story.

5,000 fans wearing paper bags might get Burke's attention at the Washington game Saturday. He seems to think that doing nothing is the way to go when a team equals the 1958 record by Boston Bruins for the worst record after 20 games played. Only 3 wins.

About the only people who stand behind the Laughs is the CBC and HNIC but there bias broadcasting of Hog Town might be cracking as I hear the new CBC/NHL agreement is cutting Toronto from 25 games on national network to 18 next season. People well get to see more Montreal and Ottawa but it still is not EVEN for all teams in east. Keep complaining to CBC, MP's local stations etc. about fair and equal broadcasting on HNIC, we are going in the right direction. Advertisers well follow as soon as the SENS. and Habs get known around Canada, people never see them often enough to get a real following because Toronto is on every Sat. to 90% of Canada even though taxpayers own CBC. Only in Canada EH.

New "pads law "coming
Fri, Nov 20, 09 at 01:58 PM
Finally, Chris King,an executive director of NHL, admitted on AM 640 radio in Toronto, friday afternoon, that a change in the shoulder pads is in the final stages and next year all players must comply. He showed his and the NHL's collective stupidity when he said that it has been in the works for 5 years. Yep, that's right. I said 5 years. What a bunch of overpaid, underperforming bunch the NHL executive branch is. They took 5 minutes to decide to move NHL teams from Winnipeg and Quebec City. The hockey games are entertaining but the question is whether the injury list could strangle the league in the next couple of years. As Don Cherry indicated, these pads are for football players not hockey players. Daniel Briere looks like Arnold Swartzenneger with those pads on.

Typical, all the talk this summer about a "Top 4" team and nowhere to be found when the season starts. Those guys said many stupid things this summer when Burke was first sinking the Leafs but my favorite was one or both of them got into a debate about the "9 NHL Calibre Defencemen" they had. Even better was when they said Leafs defence was better than my Blackhawks defence. I also enjoyed the "best 1-2 goaltending combination in the NHL." Burke has done some job on that team, I hope he ends up in Detroit when he gets canned in Toronto. Any Bruins fans out there? You guys must be in Heaven at the thought of getting Taylor Hall. Keep your chin up Leaf fans, (the real ones not arrogant losers like I mentioned) wasn't that long ago my Hawks were in the same spot as the Leafs so there is hope. We turned it around with Toews and Kane, Hall would have been a big help.

By far the best post I have read today comes from Eugene Seawalt. He hit the nail on the head on a number of levels. Brian Burke is a loud mouth fool, fact not opinion. The Referees are NOT, I REPEAT NOT out to get the Leafs. How about the 13 powerplays the Leafs got to win their first game, does this mean they are out to get Anaheim? At the end of the year, you lose a couple because of bad calls and win a couple because of bad calls. That is reality and it can't be controlled. Every time the Leafs lose dumb danny blames the refs. it makes Leaf fans look and sound stupid. Not all Leaf fans are as stupid as dumb danny, they know games are won and lost by the players. Even the two goofs Burke and Wilson can not be blamed for everything. Blame the players, they are the ones not executing. I don't think Ron Wilson is an NHL level coach, that said it was the Monster who gave up those soft goals last week against Calgary not Wilson.

Something people have to keep in mind is the Leafs' organization has done lousy ever since the introduction of the salary cap. Before, Toronto was prestigeous, and players wanted to be part of a rich hockey culture (and fatten their wallets), so people would take the bait all the time. The Leafs did very well the last few seasons before the lockout. Now that there's a salary cap, the Leafs have to do something they haven't done in years, and that's to scout lower-end talent and put together chemistry. Right now, they take up-and-coming stars and put them in huge pressure situations, hoping to develop them faster, when really it's creating a dysfunctional team. I'm not even a big Leafs fan (Red Wings, here. Miss the old rivalry), but I do believe they can turn things around. Just not this season. They need some shadow picks in the late rounds like a Hasek or a Datsyuk or many other big name players that were ultimately considered draft fodder.

Hakker here! Good question you pose; so where are those twin bitches Guru and Venca; those two great hockey minds who imposed fumigation of their hockey wisdom that we might learn? Probably doing the masquerade and hiding their faces in shame or most likely posting incognito. Like you, last summer I was pelting heaps of criticism at Burke's move and took all kinds of heat for doing so. I aint gonna claim vindication cause the old Leaf fan in me keeps wishing them the best. But I aint nobody's fool and MLSE gets nothing from me - not even my attention.

Fire the whole lot in management and coaching to scouting! What they need is a housecleaning-purge the old school way! But the devil will be dishing out snow cones in hell before that happens. The Leafs are rebuilt; that's why Burke traded away all those first round picks. He thought acquiring Kessel was adding the finishing touches to his masterpiece contender of a team. What a joke! There is no light at the end of the tunnel only many more years of doom & gloom! Yes, keep going to the Leaf games and hide your heads in shame, SUCKERS!!! LOL!

Hey Hakker
Fri, Nov 20, 09 at 05:58 PM
Upon further examination I think hockey poopoo is actually here hiding under another name. Matt Venca had a sex change and know goes by Clare. Somone suggested to me that Matt Venca is actually Brian Burke without the big words like truculance, and pugnatious. It could be, some of his theories are as stupid as some of Burke's moves. Only those two morons actually believed the Leafs had a chance this year. I work with a guy who is a huge Leaf fan and visits Toronto at least three times a year to take in a game, he is not like most Leaf fans he actually knows hockey extremely well. He called it last year when the leafs hired the talking boob Burke, because he called it a PR move to appease angry Leaf fans. He noted that Burke does not have the patience to wait for the team to develop and will get in and start making moves just to get attention. He didn't develop anything in Vancouver or Anaheim but walked into pretty good situations. He thought the Leafs should have went after Brian Murray, of course I laughed when he said that but he made a point of saying Murry can draft and build a team and does not get near the credit for what Detroit became let alone Anaheim. It is all irrelevant now, my coworker is correct in saying Leafs are worse than before Burke arrived, and we all know Burke leaves teams in awful shape right before he jumps ship.

Wilson for coach of the year

He is a great coach but his players are NDG and you have to take into consideration that we are rebuilding. In 2013 we will get a good draft choice and by then, we will be in a position to challenge for the Stanley Cup. We are where we should be at this point and if we finish with the worst record in NHL history this year, that is ok. We are on schedule and so far Mr. Burke has made good sound moves. Mr. Wilson is doing a fine job with this collection of players. I know that Montreal and the New York rangers are also rebuilding and are ahead of us in results, but that is ok because I am a loyal leaf fan and I have a lot of faith in Mr. Burke and Mr. Wilson. In some games, we are pretty good. What more can a fan ask for, anyway?

Wilson is now second guessing himself under Brian Burke's reign. So sad to bad because he squeezed water out of stone with that Leaf roster last year...
