Leafs ditch practice drills for dodge ball

Unorthodox training; Team tries to ease pressure heading into Rangers game

Garnet Exelby had prepared for the worst.

On Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs suffered their sixth straight loss to start the season. On Wednesday, the players were given the day off. So when the team reconvened for practice yesterday, the veteran defenceman arrived to the rink imagining a two-hour session of bag skating, body checking and other forms of on-ice torture.

Instead, he experienced something that the Leafs have been missing in the last two weeks: fun.

Stealing a page out of a pee wee hockey handbook, head coach Ron Wilson put away the pucks and brought out the tennis balls for an impromptu game of dodge ball yesterday. The diversion from the usual practice drills will probably not help remedy the anemic penalty kill. But it may have served a greater purpose by putting a much-needed smile on everyone's face.

"It was a nice change, a bit of reverse psychology," Exelby said. "It was exactly what the group needed. Just to let loose a little bit and remember that we're here to have fun as well."

The point of yesterday's practice was to lighten the mood in what has become a dark time for Toronto's hockey team.

Last in the National Hockey League standings with a 0-5-1 record, the Leafs have not had much to feel good about this season. They are off to one of the worst starts in franchise history. And during their last three games at the Air Canada Centre, the home crowd has serenaded Toronto's players with jeers.

"We're under the water right now," Wilson said. "We just got to find a way to get to the surface and take a breath."

When the team struggled in the past, Wilson relied on bag skating, benching and blaming his charges for a lack of effort. But by replacing his riding crop with encouraging pats on the back, the hope is the Leafs will rebuild their shattered confidence.

"Scaring guys or something is not going to work," defenceman Ian White said. "Guys are holding their sticks tighter and we're not able to make even basic plays. That might be due to not being able to handle the pressure.

"We needed to have a little fun and relax. Obviously, when you're in this position, the stress builds by the minute."

No one might be feeling the stress more these days than Brian Burke.

At the start of the season, the Leafs GM predicted this team would qualify for the playoffs. And after trading a package of first-and second-round draft picks for Phil Kessel, the pressure to perform only grew.

But rather than vent his frustrations with the team's performance, Burke told the players in a meeting yesterday that he had faith in them.

"The biggest thing is, if everyone does their job a little bit better, we'll be better off," Komisarek said of Burke's message. "You can't change the start that we've had. No one wanted this. No one wanted to start this way. But the belief and the attitude has to be that we're going to get out of this. We got ourselves in this mess and we're going to work our way out of it."

The road back to respectability begins tomorrow night against the New York Rangers.

A win will not come easy. The Rangers have won six straight games, and defeated the Leafs 7-2 when the teams last met. And Toronto will be without goaltenders Vesa Toskala and Jonas Gustavsson, who are both nursing injuries.

Still, desperation can be a powerful motivational tool.

With the Leafs not playing again until the following Saturday, a loss could mean seven more days of hanging heads and hearing criticism. But the team is doing its best not to treat this as a do-or-die game -- even though it feels like it is.

"We've got to fix how we handle adversity, otherwise this will be the longest season of our lives," said Wilson. "I'm pretty sure we have a strong enough group in there."

they should have used pucks instead of tennis balls. (I bet toskala would have won!! They'd never be able to hit him with the puck!!!)

You've got to be freakin kidding, last place....no wins and dodge ball? Wilson and Burke need to be sent packing, arrogance and self centeredness aren't working so let's get some real management in here, this team is a joke and quickly making all of us the laughing stock of the NHL.

Whats the big surprise? This team's roster is garbage. Only delusional leaf fans thought they would be better because they acquired one decent player in Beauchemin, an unproven goaltender and few meatheads. Blame burke for giving up future 1st rounders for an injured player who will struggle to score more than 45pts with this team.

I think playing a light-hearted game of dodgeball is a great idea. As he (Wilson) said, he's tried all the other tactics and they did not work. Give the guys a chance to work their way out of this mess! The fans should be supportive and not negative all the time!

Please,Take the team on a night on the town.Thats how you loosen up.Waste the time in a bar, Not on the ice. At the end of the day your still 0-6 and you have just wasted valuable ice time which could and should have been spent on honing ones skill.

Leafs need to take this time off (after Saturday's game) till next Sat and renergized and recharged. What happened to all the confidence and anticipation in the summer/training camp/preseason? The team needs to get that back. Some vets should be traded for $, draft picks and other more reasonably priced players. There are few still out there that would make this leaf team a lot better and more effective. An experienced goalie and d-man are essential and there are a couple of vet centres out there that can be signed for a decent price. Get ride of Hagman, Stempniak, Blake, White, Finger, Toskola....bring in some grit and offensive minded players. Leafs will be above .500 by December if they do.

Both Wilson and Burke are desperate as they have lost total control of the team; hence the "dodge ball" experiment. The psychology being a plea to the employees to make some sort of change (to save this Titanic) - whatever that might be. Reminds of the dog owner who rewards his pet with a biscuit as a way to properly train the beast. But, this aint a man and canine relationship, it is professional NHL hockey. By Jobe, I hope this little ploy of dodge ball works, but I aint holding my breath. The Rangers are going to roll into town come the weekend hungry for blood. Yes, most teams looking for that win are predatory when it comes to playing the Leafs these days and good predator are feral-like, always capable of sensing fear. So while this little dodge ball escapade might have sufficed to inject a little fun into a practice, higher reasoning sides with pessimism. It's going to take a whole lot more than an adjustment in mood to summon the deckhands that Burke has assembled to bail that rushing water out this sinking Titanic.

Yeah, they should take some time off after this coming Saturday's lose; especially with some of those bums earning more than $50,000 per game. There's a joint at the corner of Yonge & Bloor in Toronto called The Brass Rail where the Honeys take it all off just for the fun of the boys. I'm thinking a bucket of beer and few lap dancing for everyone, in the name of fun otta do the trick.
Yeah
Fri, Oct 16, 09 at 01:09 PM
Yeah having a fun practice is an aweful idea. They should have continued bag skating, publicly criticizing and benching players while publicly throwing the team under the bus; that was working so well for them thus far.

Any good boss will recognize when something is not working. If every single employee in an office, factory or store is contributing do poor productivity despite numerous 'consequences' and 'constructive criticism' you think the boss should keep doing the same things? Doing the same things and expecting a different result could very well define stupidity. I really hope you're nobody's boss. And to answer your question yeah, sometimes a staff lunch/picnic or a staff night out in any industry can boost employee morale, reduce stress and enhance productivity.

If I'm underpeforming my boss imposes consequences. If my entire office is underperforming the boss has to find a way to stop it. Sometimes it's with negative re-inforcement and sometimes positive. Point is it's the bosses job to try everything until everybody is on the same page.

Under/over on draft picks traded by Burke this season is 8. He's already traded 3 so only 5 left. I'll take the over. No Toronto 1st round picks until 2054. But then again, Leafs don't need them b/c they have the best defence in the league.

How can anyone expect the Leafs to compete with these two fools Burke and Wilson running the show. A six game losing streak to start the season and the punishment is a day off then dodgeball. Does Wilson work for the Government or something? Only the Government rewards incompetence. I wish Wilson was my boss, screw up my job and get a trip to Hawaii. Team USA should do well at the Olympics with these two fools running the show. Here is another suggestion coach, after the Rangers extend that losing streak to 7, you should punish them with a week in the Caribbean. Successful business interview and screen perspective employee thoroughly and replace the ones that don't pan out, particularly in this economy. Nope not a union guy but you miss the point entirely. you would 'replace the ones that don't pan out'. Really? You'd fire your entire staff who performed up to par the previous year before before exhausting every opportunity to correct the behaviour? You think that would enhance productivity? You need to read a few psychology journals (which can be accessed online) about the correlation of workplace stress and declining productivity. The overwhelming majority of the research (including European and American case studies) indicate that stress cuts workplace productivity. You can champion all the draconian, cutthroat 19th century scare tactics you want but the research directly contradicts you. Don't compare the 'real world' with the 'sports world'. They are not the same thing, never have been and don't pretend to be. Players are on contract and the reality is that you are stuck with what you have. Is that the way it should be? Another debate entirely. Asserting that Ron Wilson is doing the wrong thing because that's not how you would do it in the 'real world' is a specious argument because it's NOT the real world and Wilson has to play by NHL rules. He can't simply fire 23 guys as you would; he has to get the most out of them as that's the nature of HIS business. He tried public accountability, he tried bag skates, he tired benching players and it DID NOT WORK. You would keep doing this? YOu don't think it's good to try something different? I'm sure these guys have read the research of the importance of team building and stress reduction on productivity and since the cut throat tactics haven't worked it only makes sense to try a different approach. It's pragmatic thinking and pragmatic thinking leads to success. On the Toronto Maple Leafs 23 players make it possible for MSLE to pay its shareholders and all its employees (including the players) and THEN make 18.1 million dollars profit on top of it all. If Wilson gets more out of those 23 guys, they make the playoffs, sell more merchandise and tickets (which only make up 1/3 of Leaf revenue btw) and make more money for the company.
