Sens goalie can still laugh after suffering bizarre injury

Published: Wednesday, November 25, 2009October 2005: Toronto coach Pat Quinn sported a pair of black eyes and cuts to the face after he was hit by a puck fired by Ottawa's Chris Neil. To make matters worse for Quinn, it came during a shootout loss to the Senators, and it was second time in two weeks he was struck by a flying puck.
November 2003: Los Angeles Kings forward Ziggy Palffy lost two teeth, suffered soft tissue damage inside his cheek and was placed on the injured list after a clearing shot by teammate Ian Laperriere dinged him during a game in Denver.
January 2002: New York centre Jeff Toms suffered a broken nose and extensive facial injuries when he was slow to react to a clearing attempt that flew into the Rangers' bench. Beside him, teammate Eric Lindros ducked out of the way in the nick of time.
November 2001: As Los Angeles winger Adam Deadmarsh lifted a water bottle to his lips, a wayward clearing pass whacked him in his right hand, shattering several bones.
November 2001: Pittsburgh forward Dan Lacouture was struck in the right eye by a souvenir puck thrown from the stands during a game against the New York Islanders. Although he was not seriously hurt, he complained of blurry vision for a week and exhibited a nasty bruise on his cheek. The puck was one of thousands handed out to fans to honour Mario Lemieux.
October 2000: Carolina coach Paul Maurice was hit on the left ear by a puck while behind the bench during a game in San Jose. He received 15 stitches and complained of headaches for several days.
February 2000: Montreal rookie Jason Ward was hit in the face by a deflected shot while sitting on the bench. The team's ophthalmologist was called out of the stands to attend to Ward, who was rushed to hospital where he was found to have a cracked cheekbone.
April 1996: Pittsburgh coach Ed Johnston received a nasty gash when hit by a stray puck during a playoff game against Washington. He received 10 stitches in his forehead, but returned to the bench before the end of the game.
January 1989: Calgary Flames trainer Jim (Bearcat) Murray was leaning over to give a player a water bottle when a puck from a clearing attempt by Minnesota's Curt Giles deflected off a stick and whipped into the Flames' bench, striking Murray just below the left eye. He received 14 stitches and suffered a fractured cheekbone.
December 1988: During a game in Detroit, Toronto coach John Brophy banged his head against the steel supports beneath the Joe Louis Arena stands and took his spot behind the bench with a red blotch of blood in his mop of white hair. He refused to miss a second of the action to get stitched up.
