Islanders' McDonald suspended two games

New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Islanders forward Colin McDonald has been suspended for two games for boarding Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ben Lovejoy during Tuesday's game.

The incident occurred at 18:54 of the second period. McDonald received a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct.

Lovejoy was retrieving a loose puck in the corner of his own zone when McDonald hit him from behind into the boards.

"The key factors for us elevating this penalty to a suspension are a combination of the length of time that McDonald sees Lovejoy's number and the degree in force with which McDonald hits right through his opponent," NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan said in a video explanation of his ruling.

McDonald will forfeit $7,567.56 in salary which goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
