Pollin was recognized as a sports tycoon, also the only majority owner in the history of the NBA's Washington Wizards.

Pollin was owner of the Capitals when they reached the Stanley Cup final in 1998. The Capitals faced the Detroit Red Wings and lost in four straight games. Pollin then sold the team in 1999 to AOL executive Ted Leonsis.

He reportedly suffered from a rare brain disorder that impairs movement and balance. Pollin had heart bypass surgery back in 2005.
