So you want defenceman Tomas Kaberle from the Maple Leafs? You'd better be prepared to pay up.

Toronto general manager Brian Burke has repeatedly said he'd have to be blown away by an offer in order to trade the smooth-skating Kaberle before Wednesday's NHL trade deadline.

He defined that further today.

"It would be a minimum of a first-round pick, a guy that can play on our team right now and a top prospect," said Burke in a conference call with reporters.

Burke said he wouldn't divulge the entire details but he would be looking for a return similar to what he gave up to acquire Chris Pronger in 2006 when he was Anaheim's GM.

To get Pronger, Burke gave the Edmonton Oilers Joffrey Lupul, Ladislav Smid, two first-round picks and a second-round pick.

"It would be a package just like I paid when I got Chris Pronger from Edmonton," said Burke. "I'm not putting a price on it that I haven't paid myself in the past."

Burke has said he doesn't see a team stepping up to meet his demands but he would let Kaberle go if someone did. Kaberle, who turns 31 on Monday, is under contract for two more seasons at $4.25 million (U.S.) per season. The defenceman has frequently stated he does not want to leave the Leafs.

DO you think some guys on the leafs want to be traded because of the falling canadian dollar? 20% of 5 million is 1 million.Any thoughts? .

BOG: Contracts are signed for American Dollars, but, players know that if you are with a canadian team, the money will not be there to aquire players who want big money. As a result the player will be with a team giong nowhere and his value will probably drop as a result of playing on a loser.Good players want to play on good rich teams.

Vancouver mortgaged the farm to get Sundin but may regret it.

Soupie, your not making a whole lot of sense. To say Canadian teams don't have the money to sign big name talent wanting big bucks is ridiculous. Luongo, Sundin, Iginla, Kipper, Heatly, Spezza...the list goes on...all expensive players playing for Canadian teams. The Leafs have the most valuable franchise in the league. they are raising ticket prices when other teams need the city to subsidize it or give tickets away for free as promotions just to fill a few seats. Look at teams like Tampa, Pheonix and Nashvill....they are teams that are now trying to shed big salaries because they can't afford them. And none of them are Canadian.

Notsince67...Why would Burke make a move when player's values increase as it gets closer to the deadline. He's just waiting till the teams get desparate and willing to make a real deal...he's said numerous times he's had crap offers so far such as a top 5 pick this year for Schenn...

To all saying "good luck on Burke getting that for Kabs"...#1 he's indirectly negotiating in the media with potential suitors. In negotiations you start high when the counterparty starts low and eventually u meet somewhere in the middle. #2 It also says in the article that he doesn't think anyone would give that up for Kaberle at the moment.

End of rants!

Burke will package up Kaberle, Antropov, and their own pick for a lottery pick. Then they will flip this pick + Schenn on draft day to get the number 1.

Yes Kabs is soft but he makes that great first pass and will do wonders for the powerplay. A good powerplay can make a difference in the playoffs. This is Chelios last season so Kabs would be a great addition maybe you have to throw in Poni, but I would not want to facing a Detroit powerplay with Kabs and Lindstrom at the back throwing the puck around. Also his contract is very easy to take on. It does makes sense with the Wings. So you can see having Kabs on your team will not hurt.

The Leafs are not that far out of the playoffs. If they could win 7 of their next 10, they would be in it. I hope Burke and Wilson keep Kaberle and make a couple trades and try to make the playoffs.

trading to get into the playoffs would totally go against the rebuilding process brian burke is committed to.

The only thing Burke is committed to is further inflating his enormous ego.
