Canadiens' Laraque faces possible suspension

MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens forward Georges Laraque faces a potential suspension Monday morning over Saturday's knee-on-knee collision with Detroit Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall.

Niklas Kronwall of the Detroit Red Wings is helped off of the ice after being tripped by Georges Laraque of the Montreal Canadiens during the NHL game on November 21, 2009 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Laraque has a hearing with NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell over the incident, which was punished at the time only with a tripping minor.

Kronwall was helped from the Bell Centre rink after the first-period open-ice collision. Sunday, an MRI indicated Kronwall had suffered a bad sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee. He's expected to miss at least a month.

Laraque already was headed to the box on a delayed penalty, ultimately a double-minor for having high- sticked and cut Detroit's Darren Helm, when he and Kronwall collided in the neutral zone.

"There is no (anterior cruciate ligament) damage and that's good news," Detroit general manager Ken Holland told Detroit media on Sunday.

"They're saying it's between a Grade 2 and (most severe) Grade 3 sprain. He's out a month for sure and beyond that, it depends on how he heals. . . . A range of somewhere between four to eight weeks."

Laraque maintained the hit was accidental.

"There were four refs on the ice and they didn't call anything," he said after the game, a 3-2 shootout victory for the Red Wings.

"If they called a match penalty, it would be different. There was no intent, there was no reason why I would try to go and hurt him. It was a pure accident. That's why they called it tripping, so I'm not worried at all."

That's not how the Red Wings saw it Saturday.

"It doesn't belong here and it's sad that that's still going on," said forward Henrik Zetterberg. "(Laraque) was late (on his check), he saw he was late and he just put out his leg. It was a bad hit and he should be out of the game."

Said Holland on Saturday: "Was it knee to knee? Yes. Was it a dirty hit? Yes, I thought it was a dirty play. I have no comment on the referees because I have the luxury to look at it in slow motion. But it was knee to knee and it was a dirty play, and it's a play we don't want in hockey."

Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin had no comment at his post-game briefing, saying he'd not yet seen a replay. But his Detroit counterpart, Mike Babcock, had his views:

"That's something that shouldn't happen in hockey," Babcock said. "A guy shouldn't hang his leg out there and hurt another guy. It's unacceptable and it's disappointing because we just lost a good hockey player for a period of time."

The Canadiens had Sunday off and return to practice in Brossard, Que., Monday morning to prepare for Tuesday's Bell Centre game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

There should be an update Monday morning on the health of centre Scott Gomez, who missed Saturday's game with a lower-body injury, reportedly his groin, that lists him as day-to-day.

I saw the incident

It was a typical kneeing incident with Kronwall getting knee to knee contact from Laroque. It happens in hockey occassionally and there is very little that can be done about it unless there is a rule established which makes the punishment severe for the perpetrator. Laraque will get the usual tap on the wrist and life will go on the same as always. It is not my job to determine what the punishment should be but I think that the league should have the player that caused the injury sit out for the length of time that the injured player is out. That seems to be a fair solution. But I do not think the NHL will do anything but do a little"window dressing" and "look the other way".
CLEARLY INTENTIONAL
Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 06:30 PM
I too watched the play and there is no excuse for a player taking his skate OFF THE ICE to clip another player. It was dirty, it was cheap, and it was intentional. Laraque should be suspended but the worst part is that the Wings will lose a critical player while Montreal will lose a nobody for a fraction of the time. Its been some time since a play like this has happened and I hope Campbell does the right thing and makes the punishment a signal to those who think about making a play like this in the future. Its unacceptable for plays like this to happen nowadays, and the league should make that clear by making an example out of Laraque.
what about Cooke
Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 08:30 PM
this play was dangerous, and it was very similar to what that weasel Matt Cooke did earlier in the week to the guy on the senators, If they suspend bgl for the hit, they better suspend Cooke for the same ammount of games.
HE'S A GOON
Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 08:40 PM
Laraque is a goon, bad for the game. cant even fight toe to toe has to throw everybody down risking head on ice injury.
Has Buttman ever listened
Sun, Nov 22, 09 at 08:40 PM
He won't listen to reason. Probably hand out 2 game suspension. The knees are critical. Ask Bobby Orr.

Re Bobby Orr... I was present the time he suffered his first knee injury... it was the summer after his first season at the Winnipeg Arena during a so-called Midsummer All-Star Classic... which had pros from Manitoba play NHLers... Orr crashed into a teammate (Wayne Larkin) behind his own net and had to leave that game. Anyway, I agree with the poster who said that the injury-causing player should miss the exact number of games that the victim misses... and if the victim can never play again, the other guy should be booted out of the NHL permanently.

It looked acidental to me , just because it happened to one of the dainty little wings , people are making a big thing about this . I still laugh my head off when I think of Claude Lemieux teaching that baby Draper a lesson about taking your eyes off your opponent .

@PEABO: Dude, GL stuck out his knee deliberately, trust me. Btw, anyone who plays pro hockey is not 'dainty'... those guys are ALL tough (I don't necessarily mean fighting-wise)... you need a mean streak (back in the day we called it 'killer instinct') to make it.

Cheap shot no doubt about it.Cost them the game. The team should suspend him also.

Laraque intentionally tried to trip him, but not intentionally try and injure his knee. He missed his check causing a player to have a scoring chance after he had already been made the goat for an upcoming penalty. He'll be suspended, but it wasn't like he tried to make a dirty play.

Knee on knee. The alleged perp in this case is George. His knee struck Kronwall's knee. What if it was George hurt his knee. Would Kronwall be getting a suspension? Just wondering.

Toronto has better foward prospects than us according to Hockeys Futures, and will have close to $23 million to spend this off season. My Habs cupboard is bare under Chief Sitting Still Boob Gainey, and we are insalary cap Heck for five years thanks to him. Torontos future appears much brighter.

People need to stop calling Laraque a goon. At least goons will truly fight. Laraque is a hit and run pussy.

yes he's a goon but he's not a dirty player. the high stick was accidental and the knee on knee also. look what kind of hockey do people want to watch. the Swedish elite league. Bring back the broad street bullies and i would really like to read your comments. candy asses!!!!!
question

Instigator rule. Good or bad for hockey, and why.
peter b
Mon, Nov 23, 09 at 02:19 PM
I think its bad because these players are getting frustrated by this rule, and are looking to cheap shot each other later in games. Let the players handle their own hockey business, not Bettmans cronnies.

I dont support knee shots, but lets face Kornball is no shrinking violet. Hes one of the biggest cheap shot artists in the game. This guy can't make a hit without leaving his feet most of the time. Things do come around.
Tough guys usually play clean
Mon, Nov 23, 09 at 03:24 PM
Laraque made a mistake and will pay the price. NHL is very inconsistent with this type of thing but given Laraque's role in the game the NHL usually make examples of players like him. Knee on knee hits happen every game, most go unpunished. This one will be dealt with because the NHL can throw the book at Laraque. Like most enforcers that play in the NHL, this is not Laraque's style. Idiots like Steven Harper above don't watch much hockey if you call Laraque a "hit and run pussy", must be Colton Orr's boyfriend.

Mon, Nov 23, 09 at 12:26 PM You are dumber than Burke. Leafs have no prospects at all, nobody will trade with Burke and you are still paying guys on other teams. Nice try making yourself feel better but YOU ARE STILL A LEAF FAN,THEREFORE A LOSER.

If Sydney was the victim of this kind of cheap shot, the suspension would have already been handed out. Not that Laraque helps the habs at all anyway.
John
Mon, Nov 23, 09 at 06:55 PM
Stop looking at this from a case by case basis and keep a standard of suspensions that affect everybody equally and increase the suspension for each infraction. Say 5 games for first head shot, 8 for the second and 12 for the third. Then repeat for knee on knee collisons and blindside boards. This way it eliminates any potential favoritism and players know what they will get before the game is even complete. That will be a deterant.
Re HE'S A GOON
Mon, Nov 23, 09 at 11:39 PM
You are dumber than a Rider fan to make that statement. I don't even like montreal but have always been a fan of tough hockey. You must be a sissy that doesn't watch the game because Georges Laraque is the toughest fighter in the NHL bar none, and has been so for about the last 7 or 8 years. He is also very respectful of the code and would never try and injure somebody. I am sure you never played the game but there is honour among the tough guys. idiots like you give leaf fans a bad name.
