The National Hockey League has suspended Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin for three games after his hit to the head of Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Zbynek Michalek on Sunday.

Ovechkin left his feet to make the hit, making contact with Michalek’s head during the play in the second period of Pittsburgh’s 4-3 overtime win.

The Washington star was not penalized on the play.

The suspension is the third of Ovechkin’s career.

He will miss Tuesday’s game against Boston, Jan. 31 in Tampa against the Lightning and the Feb. 1 game in Florida against the Panthers.

Ovechkin is still eligible to participate in this weekend’s NHL all-star game in Ottawa.
