- This one might be more interesting to Canucks' fans. Looking ahead, the Detroit Red Wings will be facing acute cap pressure next season. The Wings have 17 players committed to contracts in 2009-10, totalling $43.4 million US with Henrik Zetterberg poised to sign a monster deal.

That means the Wings will be able to sign one of Marian Hossa or Johan Franzen but not both and Franzen, who would become an unrestricted free agent, has to be on the Canucks' radar.

- One final story concerning the plight of amateur athletes in this country. A couple of months ago, a member of the national speed-skating team was scheduled to meet with a potential sponsor. The athlete in question took a bus to the meeting because they didn't have enough money for a cab.

This athlete is also an Olympic medallist and a world champion. They had an agent. Alas, they had no sponsors.
