RHA T10i headphones

These noise-isolating, high fidelity in-ear headphones are crafted and customizable. RHA promises the handmade dynamic driver will “reproduce all genres of music with high levels of accuracy and detail.” They’re made with injection-moulded stainless steel and come with three sets of interchangeable tuning filters, allowing you to adjust the bass or treble. Add to that 10 pairs of ear tips in various shapes and sizes along with a carrying case to put it all in. The three-button remote and microphone that comes with it will work with your Apple smartphone or tablet. Another difference you’ll notice is the over-the-ear design, meant to give a more comfortable and secure fit. At $240, they come with a three-year warranty. rha-audio.com.

Phiaton MS 100 BA headphones

If you want to spend a bit less, but still have in-ear headphones that will leave you never wanting to settle again for cheapie earbuds, check out Phiaton’s MS 100 BA. I first tried these out on a flight, comparing them to ones that were about half the Phiaton’s $100 price (or $80 US). The difference was remarkable: The Phiatons may have been twice the price but they were easily more than twice the quality. They’re truly noise isolating and they immerse you in rich sound that doesn’t leave you straining to hear higher or lower frequencies — both listening to music and for watching movies. They have a multi-function remote and microphone so you can take and make calls. Their red tangle-free cord makes it easy to store them in the pouch that comes with them, along with four sets of silicon ear tips. phiaton.com.

Bose SoundLink Mini II Bluetooth Speaker

Bose has just released the latest update in its SoundLink Mini line, the Mini II. It has the same $200 price tag as the Mini, with several updates including a built-in speakerphone for taking calls and an improved lithium-ion battery that will run up to 10 hours on a single charge with a charging cradle to plug in via USB or with the wall charging plug that’s also included. It lets you connect up to two devices at the same time, with its Bluetooth connection giving it a range of about nine metres. It also has a 3.5 mm auxiliary port for wired devices. It’s the same size as the original SoundLink Mini, weighing in at close 700 grams and measuring 5.1 centimetres high, 18 cm long and 5.8 deep. Optional $25 soft covers protect the speaker and give you colour options. bose.ca.

Ultimate Ears Roll speaker

Just in time for beach season, Ultimate Ears, a subsidiary of Logitech, has released its new Roll, a little Bluetooth speaker with big specs. The Roll’s 360-degree sounds pumps out tunes from a dish-shaped design that measures just over 13 centimetres in diameter and weighs 340 grams. It’s waterproof, able to survive submersion in one metre of water up to 30 minutes and its range is 20 metres. It can provide music on its own or you can run it in combination with other UE speakers. Apps for iOS and Android devices let you control the speaker remotely. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery will last up to nine hours playing music, and takes 5½ hours to fully recharge. It also has a 3.5 mm audio output for your non-Bluetooth devices. Just launched, it’s listed at $100 US. At ultimateears.com.

Ecoxgear Ecorox waterproof wireless speaker

This waterproof Bluetooth speaker will float, giving you a chance to scoop it up if it falls overboard or into the pool. It will broadcast music from any Bluetooth device via its wireless connection plus, like the wireless speakers above, it also has a 3,5 mm auxiliary jack. The Ecorox is 6.6 cm high, 13 cm wide and 7.6 cm deep and weighs 311 grams, putting it in the same size range as the UE Roll but with a rectangular design compared to the Roll’s puck shape. It has a 12-hour rechargeable battery, which takes 2½ hours to recharge. It can be mounted on your bike handlebars or on a dashboard. Check it out at ecoxgear.com.
