Mayor Gregor Robertson spoke to the media for the first time Tuesday about separating from his wife, and insisted he has had “absolutely” no inappropriate relationships.

During a break in a council meeting Tuesday, Robertson stepped in front of a crowd of reporters and said that questions about his separation from Amy Robertson and rumours surrounding the breakup are behind him.

Over the weekend, Amy and Gregor Robertson issued a statement saying they recently agreed to separate, and that rumours circulating online are false.

Robertson and his handlers have assured reporters no “third party” is involved in the couple’s separation.

“It is behind me at this point,” Robertson said. “It is a personal matter.”

Robertson was asked if he believes his response has satisfied the public that he has had no inappropriate relationships, and that he is electable, based on the rumours surrounding his personal life.

“Absolutely,” Robertson said.

Robertson was also asked whether his party’s decision to release an email from a political rival that outlined rumours about “philandering” and Robertson being “thrown out” of his new Kitsilano home, added fuel to the controversy.

“Well I’m not going to let those kind of rumours circulate, (because) frankly it is not fair to my family and kids and wife, and I’m going to fight back,” Robertson said. “I think it was important that the public understand the kind of B.S. that is being circulated, as a political campaign.”
